What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Haim,

Did she get better than what's on the YouTube?

I checked her out since she's got a lot of fan.

I need to listen to it without a visual. All I could remember was her falling bossoms. I felt like I was on a hot bus with a sweaty over-sexed nympho next to me. :x

Then again, that's not a bad thing if you are a guy.

she is german from italian father and german mother.

It's a cool label with only a few releases out, yet:

EJ,

Thanks for the link.

I've checked them out since I have never heard of this company.

I like their motto:

“If it’s well done, let’s not worry about quantity”.

I'll give Ms. Pacini a try. The other day I was listening to Schuman's Carnaval but Ballet version with a full orchestra.

I am a practical man who is very much enticed by beauty but personally, if I could get rid of all the in your face cleavage and distasteful covers I would in a heartbeat.  It serves no purpose in what I am after anyway, other than to annoy me.  (BTW, I'm not referring to Martha but some of the examples above.)

Just give me the "bare" essentials, like this and I'm more than content.  In fact, I would have difficulty keeping my two hands off this one.  Such innocent beauty...

While I am a great admirer of Miss Hahn's art on the violin, I have to say this record turned out crap - there's not a whole lot to Paganini but Accardo/Dutoit make it appear like a masterpiece compared to the vulgar humpahpah that Hahn / Oue come up with. Conductors can make or break a soloist; in this case, it is, unfortunately, the latter.

But the cover photo makes up for it. The cleavage is magnificent.

Liebeslieder Waltzes (18), Op. 52 by Johannes Brahms
Martha Argerich (Piano), Gabriela Montero (Piano)

Doug,

I adore Gabriela Montero. She's super talented with amazing ability for a live improvisation@!
I am not convinced when she plays a *standard* program. How is she with Martha?

Martha went through the same transformation with her debut album.

ORIGINAL COVER: A Wholesome Argentinian girl

LATER REISSUES: Sultry and emotive girl

LOL!

That Decca Paganini Accardo/Dutoit vinyl is magnificent, tho.

I have a few Oue's Reference recordings ( just for the sound ) but he's dull.

Graham,

Here is another one which includes one of the most beautiful (and sad) non Christmas but Christmas related song, Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis.

These two arrived yesterday -

Both are top-drawer performances and will probably replace my previous long time first choices, which are Bruckner – Bloomstadt/Denon and Shostakovich – Haitink/Decca  - time will tell!
