What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

First proper listen .....

I do like this Richter, though his first movement of the 960 is very slow moving, ....

very good remastering as well

A beautiful, misty, restrained, low-key performance of Daphnis et Chloé and the other orchestral works on this disc. But the marvel of this disc is the recording quality - first time I listened, I'd swear I was in the Rotterdam concert hall, with its quirky acoustic.

Cheers,

As we are coming to year end, thought i would look back at the first listing on this thread.

Interesting that first albums were Handels Messiah and then Genesis.

Two very different albums (but maybe on a similar biblical theme "name wise")

also the fact that the thread was just for the 2012 year and so has achieved an average of almost a new page full of postings every single day.

I assume we will start a new 2013 thread on the same basis, as its great to see what people are enjoying and why. Great listing for recommendations as well

On vinyl. Electrifying riffs and solos that are mind-boggling. One of the Dire Straits best albums.

Continuing with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, in Capucon's great recording of the Beethoven concerto. One of the best of recent recordings. The Korngold is well played, too, but the work itself is too sugary for its own good.

Cheers,

Vinyl; 2008 re-master;

wondering what will be the SQ for the remasters on pre-order for early 2013, thus after a rather disappointing "Seconds Out"

On CD.

Lucinda Williams makes this whole music thing seem so simple. She really does have an almost unique voice; while it can sound quite abrasive at times, it reaches into your soul, especially during the more melancholy moments. This is a must have album be warned once this album is in your blood, it will NEVER leave...
