What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)
Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011
With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.
For me, they were fairly hopeless after this (once Darren Emerson lost interest) but this has some epic tracks...
^ Around 5-6 minutes in, even the lazy 'Pink Floyd for the Nineties' reviews of the time slowly start to make some sense.

Tharaud's best disc, and IMO the best Chopin waltzes on disc!
Cheers,

EJ, what are a few of the characteristics that intrigue you about this disc or that you look for in the Waltzes?

Doug,
More a feeling than fact and difficult to put into words. Tharaud strikes a beautiful balance between straightforward simplicity and an underlying emotional current (mostly, sadness, growing into despair in the faster works - but not at the expense of a light touch). And it feels right... more than any other performance of the waltzes I know. He displays some of this in his recording of the préludes but there the competition is much stiffer, and the styles more varied. I love that one too, but not necessarily more (or less) than, say, Arrau, Pogorelich, Pires or Demidenko.

Decca Mono 1967. Mick Taylor and John McVie are standouts with great blues guitar from Mick and tremendous bass lines from John.

Steve, you should hear this on the 7 1/2ips 4 track reel tape - fabulous SQ. Certainly knocked the stuffing out of the recent Rhino Hi-res release.

anyway... just finished listening to this. Really beautiful album and managed to get so much more from it listening on the home system as opposed to in the car.
