What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I've been using one song of this album as a 24bit demo for a couple of years now called 'You Haven't Done Nothing' which is fantastic so I thought it was about time that I bought the SACD.

Gaspard Le Roux: Pieces pour deux clavecins

Lisa Crawford & Mitzi Meyerson, harpsichords

"With the 'Pieces de clavecins' printed in 1705, Gaspard Le Roux was one of the very first composers to publish music for two harpsichords, soon afterwards followed by the Couperins (Francois & Armand-Louis), as well as Graun, Krebs and Handel. This music was enormously successful throughout late Baroque Europe, to the point of being pirated in Amsterdam."

Highly recommended.

"The Last Star gives full prominence to a truly stunning voice.  The album has a very low- key feel about it which almost understates the quality of the musicians supporting Heidi – Ian Carr and Boo Hewerdine on guitars,Michael McGoldrick on uilleann pipes and whistles, Andy Cutting on accordion, and with harmony vocals provided by Kris DreverEddi Reader and Karine Polwart."

Fine album. Fine live act as well.

Napolitan composer; pupil of de Macque; has very very different keyboard works compared to later ones.

It's not over-ornamented acrobatic  rather tuneful with a little  melancholy and full of wonderful harmonies.

Tasini plays on a wonderful sounding  Anonyme clavecin from Ferrara.

If you like the "old blues" like Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac this album is for you.'Tank Full Of Blues' is a testament to what great talent the man is,now in his 70s but sounding much younger.

What is his best CD?

Depends what period of Johnny's career, early, middle, or late.  Which tracks do you like from the CD you have posted?

Graham.

Hi FritzCD: Sorry I am a little late with my reply. You could try the following:

Late JC In 2000, Johnny's health had weakened considerably, but this release confirmed that his creative powers were still very much intact. IMO ‘Solitary Man’ ranks among the finest moments in a recording career that lasted for over half a century.

Mid Period JC. This is a CD reissue of JC's 1969 concert in San Quentin prison."Johnny Cash At San Quentin" is one of his very best live albums, and one of the very few to truly capture the darkness and rage that lies deep in his music, On "San Quentin", JC careens through a series of ballads, spirituals, rockabilly ravers and hit singles, and the Man in Black takes full advantage of the unusual circumstances. He draws energy from the unusual audience, and creating an incredibly intense atmosphere which results in one of the most raw and stimulating performances you'll ever hear.

Early JC. Johnny Cash's early years at Columbia were, artistically speaking, the best of his career until he embarked upon the American recordings in the mid nineties. This album, released in 1965, was toward the end of this period, where he was so inspired by folk song and story telling. JC was a great songwriter, but he was also a marvelous interpreter of other people's work. And so it is here. He takes on three Bob Dylan tracks and totally owns them This is a classic JC album imo

Hope this helps you to enjoy one of the truly great artist of the 20th century.

Regards Graham.

The Shins - Port Of Morrow

The Pomegranates - One Of Us

Indie pop.  My first Pomegranates album was 'Everybody Come Outside'  which I got earlier this year.  I had heard a single on the radio and decided to give the album a try.  I liked this so much, I have begun listening to other albums in their catalog, and have yet to be disappointed.

Now ... Black Prairie - A Tear In The Eye Is A Wound In The Heart

Vinyl (2011-STARDUST Records)

Given this as a Christmas present. Bit disappointed to find the album filled with alternate versions and live recordings. Not bad but if you are unfamiliar with Wolf's work, I would suggest you find something released by Chess for your introduction. Great cover though!

Alt-rock singer-songwriter.  I guess this would fall into the same vein as Ryan Adams, Rhett Miller (The Old 97's), Ben Folds, and the like.
