What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Harold Arlen Song Book

From The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Song Books CD box set.

I finally splurged and got this set after years of thinking about it.  I think the sound quality is very good and it has been worth the expense.

It reminds me of a dem of Naim equipment at my dealers in the early 90's, in anticipation of an upgrade

A Christmas gift from my brother - kind of neat to hear him returning home as a younger man just as he was about  to have his fame truly explode.

Joseph Calleja, Decca's #2 star tenor (behind Jonas Kaufmann), in a program that suits him to a tee. With him and Kaufmann, as well as Rolando Villazon and Roberto Alagna, we really cannot complain about the current state of tenors that are able to do justice to Verdi and Puccini. Now bring on the baritones and basses!

Regarding this program, Calleja at times reminds of Beniamino Gigli or Carlo Bergonzi, minus the sobs, scoops and other histrionics - really rather excellent. A lyrical tenor, with enough heft to step into the slightly heavier roles.

A note regarding the conductor, Marco Armiliato. He seems to have become the recital partner of choice and really does an outstanding job in all work I've heard him in. A whole cut above the norm.

Cheers,

EJ

The famous 'harp-way' toccata of a really excentric early 17c .composer, Kapsberger.
