What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Is it just me who thinks that just about all Naim album covers are shockingly bad?! Makes no sense.

I actually quite like this one!

Ha. I had a feeling that might be the answer I got. I can't think of too many others, but the ones with Tony Fortune (and his guitar) are possibly the worst offenders.

Pink Floyd - Wish you were here

CD, EMI Remaster 1994

Played on CDS3/XPS2 -> 200/202 -> Sonus Faber Cremona Monitors (via NACA5)

With my recent renewed interest in hi-fi, I just gave this disc a spin. A 1994 remaster, my copy is made in Italy(!). I used to have this on LP, and while I never thought very highly of its pressing, I found this CD really poor. Anything from the synths in the opening track to the rockier bits on Have a Cigar, the midrange sounded muffled and the vocals harsh. I wonder if anyone has compared this to the new 2011 remasters.

Graeme  - ah ha - I've also got the half-speed mastered vinyl version (must be '80s?), so I've been lining Mr Knopfler's pockets several times over! It's just a case of convenience and the car CD player.

The new version is alot noisier i.e. tap hiss is very apparent but the energy level & clarity is much enhanced.

On first listen, I loved the expansive feel and overall atmosphere. Then, I had a spell of getting lost in its minimal saminess (probably the idea) and was almost frustrated because it doesn't take off and go somewhere, as say, Sigur Ros might. After a week or so though, I can appreciate its subtlety much more, and how it all slowly blends together, and changes almost imperceptibly. Had to put it on again after seeing your post, and now there's moments (some of the delicate piano melodies, for instance) that just floor me.

Will do. Have played it twice but it demands more concentration than I gave it. Not as immediate as Nils Frahm but that does not mean it is not as good. Time will tell.

The album that has really been capturing my attention today is the new Portico Quartet album - I think this could be up your street. 4th play now, this time on headphones.

Genesis Live - No, not that one!

Got the old vinyl out  to listen to "The musical Box" and  ended up listening to the whole album.

Philip is quite good on the old drums. Pete, Mike, Tony and Steve were  all there. Nice!
