What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

With my recent renewed interest in hi-fi, I just gave this disc a spin. A 1994 remaster, my copy is made in Italy(!). I used to have this on LP, and while I never thought very highly of its pressing, I found this CD really poor. Anything from the synths in the opening track to the rockier bits on Have a Cigar, the midrange sounded muffled and the vocals harsh. I wonder if anyone has compared this to the new 2011 remasters.

Yan, the 2011 sounds much better than the '94 master - and I only have a humble Marantz CDP! Get the 2-CD Experience edition.

Re WT Unforgiving.

One I'm still to give a serious listen too - very different departure from their other stuff I thought on my first listen.

They are very good live!

DB,

Agreed, the album is a lot more polished than previous albums  but Sharon's voice still sounds gutsy and powerful as ever. Tony

First listen.  Have their last three albums, now starting to check out earlier releases.

If you are checking out their earlier stuff then this should be next...

Making Movies - Remastered.

Much better than my now much older original version on CD.

Worth the fiver it cost.

Graeme  - ah ha - I've also got the half-speed mastered vinyl version (must be '80s?), so I've been lining Mr Knopfler's pockets several times over! It's just a case of convenience and the car CD player.

The new version is alot noisier i.e. tap hiss is very apparent but the energy level & clarity is much enhanced.

The album that has really been capturing my attention today is the new Portico Quartet album - I think this could be up your street. 4th play now, this time on headphones.

Just looked this one up, and this from the press release piqued my interest: "the inspiration of Burial, Mount Kimbie and Flying Lotus rubs shoulders with the textures of Arve Henriksen and Bon Iver and echoes of Steve Reich and Max Richter." The BBC's review mentions loads more stuff I like, so I've downloaded 'Ruins' as a freebie from their website, had a listen to 'Steepless'... and ordered it. Thanks
