What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

This evening's music so far...

A great mix from Greg Wilson.  I don't get out to as many good clubs as I used to so this kind of album brings a little bit of it back home.  Highlights are 40 Thieves and "Don't Turn It Off" and a fab cover of Duffy's "Mercy" by The Third Degree - so authentic you'd swear it was the '60s original.

And if you like this kind of thing (ambient trance), this is just about as good as it gets...

Reminds me of a gig I saw at The Rainbow in 78 with John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett!

How is it Adrian? I opted for the new Tord today and am listening to it now:

It's pretty good, I think, without being a startling change of direction.

No surprise here, another excellent disc by Yevgeny Sudbin.

I took a punt on this based on your recommendation, ordered it on vinyl and it arrived today. I had never heard Porcupine Tree before, and only seen them mentioned on various forums, just played the first side and I too am blown away so many thanks.

If anyone would care to recommend any more Porcupine Tree my credit card is at the ready, even though this thread has already cost me a fortune!

Another special album:

And a third wonderful album for this evening:

Posted on: 30 January 2012 by kuma

Vladimir Horowitz: Chopin Andante Spianato & Grande Polonaise Brillante in E flat, Op.22

A historical grade sound quality as this was recorded back in 1945.

A romantic start followed by bold and dynamic second half which showcases charming extrovert Horowitz touches everywhere. Overly dramatic. Sure! But I love his creative interpretation and the best of all this is just a fun listen. Not a school maamy Chopin which this piece can be easily that. ( too many of versions have been overly prettified and fussed over to death )

Too bad that he never recorded this tune again with a better recording.

John, re. PT: The next step from Recordings is to then get Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream.  Signify is another wonderful PT album that I'd recommend here.  Things started getting heavier with the release of In Absentia - another superb album and arguably their most commercial release.  If you want an idea of the earlier stuff then buy Stars Die and go from there.

Kuma, I'm something of a sucker for those gorgeous Soria series RCA sets.  That's one I don't have...

I took a punt on this and a whole bunch of stuff from the Tirk and Nang labels.  Interesting so far...

I agree with you Nigel on Tord. I played it on the 6.30 train to work this morning and it did a good job of soothing me and sending me back to sleep, typical Tord territory.

As for the Andy Sheppard, well I think it is well worth a listen. Trio format, I think I might just go and see this band when they tour next month. It has been picking up good reviews and deserved from what I have heard so far. Some typical Sheppard licks but also some Garbarek feel in places.
