What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Richard, a truly great album, they certainly were  an amazing couple, RT on his own is very special too.

Just reminding myself with this:

I heard that the Weeknd mixtape trilogy will be released as a remastered “package” in 2012. I've only really listened to the first one so far but have all three. It's a bit incongruous mentioning it here as I know nearly everyone won't like it. But in case you're curious:

The late Talk Talk albums are fabulous but I think I like the Mark Hollis solo effort even more. Thanks!

Vinyl. It  is an almost addictive album:-

Giovanna Pessi introduces a unique project of old and new songs in which 17th century pieces by Henry Purcell are interspersed with 20th century ballads of Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake and 21st century songs of Susanna Wallumrød, all rendered timeless by the ‘early music’ instrumentation and Susanna’s pure, understated vocal style.

Another streamed playlist - a compilation of Monk and Coltrane. Can be challenging but very worth the effort. Need to play the vinyl of this when I have stopped faffing about with last minute prep for tonight's beano.

Underworld 'Dubnobaswithmyheadman'. The post about Talk Talk left me in a mood for 'Tongue' and 'Dity Epic' from this album, the first of which definitiely shows the influence of Talk Talk.

Overall a somewhat sombre, withdrawn set of Préludes, beautifully played by Tharaud.

Cheers,

Nagoya you have strange but great musical taste .... hard work that some of that Mark Hollis may be, isn't it a fantastic recording?  Clean, gritty and dark dark silences.  Love it.

Damn sites that don't allow image linking - Underworld as above.

After Jamies post above,

I thought i would play some Underworld Born Slippy's.

Why?

Because its one of the best tracks to see how good your system and speakers are.

If you can play Born Slippy Lontano Loud without it blowing something?

All is good.

Its also such a brilliant track.

Argerich's 1977 recording is one of the famous sets of Preludes, but for some reason it doesn't do much for me.

Pires' Préludes, on the other hand, belong to the best I've heard.

Van Morrison calls James Hunter 'the best voice and best-kept secret in British R&B and soul.'

Who am I to argue?

Andy,

I have seen/heard that track blow so many pairs of speakers over the years.

Be careful with that volume control.

Just followed it up with some of this. The kids from next door have just been round to find out what that "Bangin Toon" was.....  their words not mine....

One of the Discovery Box Set CD's. These do sound rather good, very pleased with this set. The Division Bell never sounded better, these are all now copied to the Unitiserve and sounding marvellous.
