What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Portico Quartet, excellent eponymous third album, released earlier this week.  Not just 'more of the same' as the first two albums.  And excellent live if you get the opportunity to see them.

I always get an involuntary anticipation feeling of the ELO coming in soon after the start with a loud electric guitar plus rock band continuo…

However, after getting over my mental lapse in reason this 1955 recording is imho very easy and enjoyable to listen to, seems more warmly focused than my vinyl LP version of Otto with the Phil Orch which has a produced date of 1960 so i’m not sure if this maybe the same said recording (?) but from what I hear it doesn’t quite sound the same.

The no.6 in F major “Pastorale” a live recording from Wien 1960 follows on nicely, beginning steadfast with control and power to pleasantly grip one’s attention.

Playing disc no.8 of 10x CD box-set...

All very nice but i find my fill satisfied after 2 LvB symphonies… time to move on.

Debs

No 2. Recorded/Aufgenommen/Enregistre: X.1957, Kingsway Hall, London; No.5 X.1959 Abbey Road Studios, London

If it's as good as the RCA set - or even better - then it should be a real bargain.

Richard,

The box is light on technical detail. Each disk does note the date of its latest "compilation". Most are betwen 1990-1997, which I assume is the time of the last remaster.  This set itsdefinitely not a new remaster. Note sure if that helps.

Tim,

thanks.  That's actually good news because that's exactly the time that the WCF remasters were done.  Great stuff.

I was a bit of a Johnny come lately to this album.  I guess it got a bit over-hyped by critics - possibly to balance the reticence of it's creator, but if you can get past that, it's truly innovative and possibly quite brilliant.

On original vinyl.  it's taken a hammering over the years but still sounding very fresh and alive.  Indeed, undead...

Ten Years After. 'Undead'

Great album Richard. I'm lucky to have both the original mono and stereo versions in excellent nick. Also the self titled debut LP. I love the jazz guitar influence on these 2 early albums before they became more rock orientated. I saw Alvin Lee at the Arena in St Albans a few years ago, stlll a great guitarist.

Just checked it out on MOG - fantastic. Ordered from the Womad online store in the UK - Good to know that they ship free to the US!  It's only available here as an import at very high prices.
