What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Chicago's own!!  Great music and recording by an under appreciated artist.  Good sonic test for any HiFi system.

Would have liked the piano to sound more grand and in focus but the violin is close with good tonal structure, and nothin shrill going on here.

Took me a while to search my taste and allow for some compositional adjustment... the beginning could wash away in the background as music that imo hasn't really aged well, but i found the later works become more intriguing after relaxing into the dreamy state my mind finds necessary to enthuse.

lucky i have my bubble-bath : )

Haitink was 31 when he made his first recording of Bruckner's 8th, one of classical music's summits. It sounds like work in progress, as if he was feeling his way into the music, not sure where it  is heading. The result is fascinating, spontaneous and also uneven. He re-recorded this symphony many times, including two studio recordings (Amsterdam and Vienna), which show him on much surer footing. But this first one remains a great experience.

Cheers,

EJ
