What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Dvorák: New World Symphony: Reiner/CSO

Often this Living Stereo album is recommended but I just don't get on with Reiner/CSO on this. As usual very polished but sounds a bit commercial and trite. It's an over played corny tune ( largo ) yet Toscanini/NBC '53 set moves me in spite much poorer recording.

Amazing what you find when you look in the "W" section of your CD section. I've seen KK post this in the past. A great album.

It's a shame that Jim Kerr is such a tw*t because simple minds are largely ignored and some of their early LPs were very good (new gold dream; chelsea girls anyone?) - on the black stuff....

This is already starting out to be a good musical year with some excellent new releases - Andy Sheppard and Portico Quartet for starters.

The more I listen to this, the more a return to form this is for Tord after the Restored, Returned outing spoilt by some vocals. This is beautiful music. I am looking forward to seeing him next month.

Currently listening to a CD album of surprisingly good tribute covers, free with German music magazine Musikexpress (Sept 2011), found in the general detritis left by No1 daughter when she flew off to Austria for the next semester.

12" Black stuff.

Its a great test track for systems.

If you can play this at volume and your speakers don"t tell you to turn it down??

You are on a winer.

Stu.

Just purchased this week from Base.com, having discovered the NY sessions version of Idiot Wind on YouTube. Completely different interpretation to that on BOTT. And even better to these ears at least.

How's the overall sound quality on the redbook cd?

Adrian,

When these guys tour the US they just do the two coasts figuring that we, who live in the middle of the continent,  will be content just to enjoy them through our sound systems. I don't have The Well yet nor the Restored. Being There is my favorite album out of their first three.

Hey Richard,

Assume the CD version on (original recording reissued) on Amazon is good, or the folks reviewing can't hear as the ratings are very good. Can't tell if this is the 24bit version.

Regards,

Mack

Has to be one of my all time favourite albums. I have loved it since I was about five and got into the studio discussion at the beginning of Andy Warhol. I have two copies on vinyl, both from a car boot in Raines Park. Is there a decent audiophile vinyl pressing?

One of my all-time favourites as well.  As for "audiophile" reissues, the EMI Centenary issue is out there. You may get lucky and find a copy. Haven't got a copy myself but if the others are anything to go by, it should be pretty good.  Probably the next best thing to a mint early issue.

I also listened to the early RCA CD this evening.  So much better than the 24bit re-master, you wonder how the latter could ever have made it onto disc.  A horror.
