What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Mozart Symphony No.25: Klemperer/Philharmonia '56

It's been a while since I've listened to the No.25. Tonight listened side by side with Bruno Walter and Marriner version.

Klemperer's has a lot more soul and much easier for me to follow the tune.

Many postings of Schumann's piano trios here, lately. I'm new to this music, for years I only knew the old recording by the Beaux Arts Trio, which didn't manage to make these works come alive for me. With the number of professional trios sprouting like mushrooms, I thought I'd give these guys a try: they play on authentic instruments, which in Schumann's case are only slightly different from what we are used to. The pianoforte is a significantly less clangy affaire than the instrument that Beethoven would have used fifty years earlier, but does give an edge to this music. Voces Intimae are in any case on top of their game: I hear some of the characteristics of the Quartetto Italiano in their music making, a very good thing IMO.

How the hell did these get under my radar for so long?

Very impressed indeed.

Check out the reviews on Amazon - the 5* ones are not wrong.

Peter Hammill - PNO,GTR,VOX, BOX

Just arrived, 7 discs of live Hammill to listen to. Superb so far (provided you like Hammill of course, a bit of an acquired taste for most).

Vinyl or iTunes for a couple of weeks, as CDS2 is back at base for some TLC:-

Still.

It appears to be stuck in the machine.

or on repeat.

Getting past tack six is not easy.

So many influences on this album it's not true. From The Beach Boys to Porcupine Tree via Marillion and then rap??? Yes, PF and Steve Hackett are all in there too.

My wish list is going to be growing.

Ok - I like it.
