What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Give them your email address in return for a 12 track album sampler as a thank you for being voted label of the year at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide awards.

Thanks reubs, I saw that one myself when I googled the Lapalux cover and just downloaded it - I thieved 'Cali's finest' from the press release on the Brainfeeder site, of course! Not sure how they ended releasing the last Martyn album, as it's not their usual kind of thing, though there's a couple more I'll have to investigate.

What's Thundercat's album like? I remember you posted it a few weeks back, and meant to ask you then.

I think you might prefer Lapalux to Thundercat's to be honest. It's nice and smooth, and the George Duke cover is great, but I think I prefer it as a few tracks mixed in with other stuff, like Lapalux, Floating Points etc.

I love the Ghost People album btw.

Schubert's great final string quartet, in the incomparable 1980 recording from the Alban Berg Quartett. The work is particularly difficult to pull off, next to the need to be in tune with Schubert's jolly mood (in common with his other late works), it requires an almost Brucknerian attention to the musical architecture. In this it is rather similar to Schubert's Symphony No.9 - performances either sing, or seemingly go nowhere.

Today I heard the Belcea Quartet's performance on the car radio, which I liked very much as well - very different, less serious than the ABQ but clearly with a deep understanding of this music.

Cheers,

EJ

Bruckner's 9th in Bernard Haitink's rare second recording with the Concertgebouw. Recording quality is not optimal, the early 80s multi-miking sounds a bit unnatural, but not enough to debase this fantastic performance. The geniuses at Philips never sought to reissue this disc - I finally got mine last year, second hand in great condition.
