What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

reubs, I can guess what you mean about Thundercat from the little I've heard - it's kind of erm, noodling. Thanks for mentioning the Benji B - loads of good stuff there, including a track from the new Burial and one off the imminent Scuba album, and I haven't even got to the Lapalux. His ep reminds me of early Neptunes in places, which is no bad thing, right?

playing this on vinyl because now I have a solid floor and can jump around without the record jumping too!

Do you play the cello part or piano part? I think your Avatar already gives me the answer?!

I think it would be wonderfull to be able to play the cello, I love the instrument. And my wife being a pianist, we could do the Franck at home.

I would love to see your CD collection, I think I would like it very much

Aleg, Doug,

Curious to hear the Franck - is it a reworking of his violin sonata?

Cheers,

EJ

Yes, it is a transcription for cello of the Violin Sonate.

The Kindred EP is stunning, a bit of a switch-up in terms of sounds and drum programming, and I like the intentional drop-outs that give it a sense of a pirate transmission coming through the airwaves. He does seem head and shoulders above other producers at the moment, though that dBridge track on Beji B's show which was basically just a break from the JBs was heavy too.

Thanks for pointing out he similarity to early Neptunes with the Lapalux. I know what you mean, when you could hear their professed fondness for Stereolab and Steely Dan moving through in what were some actually pretty outré mainstream hits. The late 90s and early 00s really was a high watermark with them and Timbaland really pushing boundaries.

Re Thundercat; noodling may be a fair term.

This is a great piano trio recording. Hearing it makes me want to buy volumes 2 and 3 immediately!

Riverside - Out of Myself. Polish band very much in the same vain as Porcupine Tree. Some excellent guitar work on this.

Reminds me of my school days everybody was listening to this on their mono portable tape machines. Great days for music.
