What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Van Morrison "What's Wrong With This Picture"

On vinyl:
U2 "Achtung Baby"
Doug,
Hopefully I will get a chance real soon to listen to Vinnitskaya's piano.
The Guardian is going to play one track a day from the new Springsteen album. Here is the first one today and pretty good IMHO. I need a good Bruce album to cheer me up, so here is hoping.

New album from Peter Broderick - I like it. Very good. Listening to it on spotify now. I need to decide whether or not it makes it across the line to a purchase, with my new tougher on myself regime this year :-)
The Sunday Times raved about it yesterday saying "A truly exceptional album from Peter Broderick"
A dream line up with Paolo Fresu and Omar Sosa (well for some of us). Add in some electronics and this is really very good.
The Temper Trap "Conditions"
top of the pile:
Sarah Pierce "Bring It On"

Thanks for posting this one - will have to give it a listen as I keep seeing his name mentioned lately - he's on the A Winged Victory... album as well as his own for Erased Tapes, of course. Just wondering if you've heard the album he's just released with Nils Frahm? (I haven't.)

I did listen to some tracks but I wanted it to be more Nils Frahm than it was - I was not in the mood for the vocals.....

Ok, thanks. I have plenty of other things (make that loads) I want to hear just now, so it can wait a while.
Any great day with music becomes astounding and unforgettable when you add a daily dose of Anna Vinnitskaya and the incredible G minor Piano Concerto by Prokofiev. While there are monster technicians out there I prefer the passion and intelligence of Vinnitskaya. I can never get enough and this can play on repeat from morning to evening.
Even Prokofiev couldn't play this piece. Go figure. Doesn't matter, I thank him for having the vision to leave such profound, cathartic music that only speaks to us beyond our capability to understand it at a conscience level.

hi Florestan
New in today from lovely Anna

On the black stuff's.
For now, this....
All on Hotflush Recordings' SoundCloud page in advance of next week's release and the arrival of one of my rare vinyl purchases - for investment purposes, as I like to tell myself.
I'm liking the slower (almost housier?) 120 bpm or so, and some of it even sounds like it could be from an episode of Miami Vice.
Jamie,
I gave box set 1 and 2 a play a few weeks back.
First time for a very long time.

Released on the 27th of this month, this is the new album from Robert Glasper on Blue Note. He really has two styles of music making, modern jazz piano trio, which is outstanding and this band, more hip/hop electronic, female vocal type stuff.
I love his piano trio music, some of the best coming out of the US. This, though is not for me, once heard easily forgotten.
Zoe Rahman, from the Courtney Pine band, solo album. Modern jazz piano trio with some other stuff added in here and there (flute, sax) mixing English, Irish and Bengali influences. Pretty accomplished.
Arrived in the post today. Haven't heard their stuff for years
On the black stuff's.
Stu,
I have been listening to my vinyl copy that came today (first time I have heard this album) and think it is superb! One of their best?
Andy,
My copy was shipped on Friday and got here this morning.
Its on its first play and i am liking the pressing's.
Sounds brilliant.
I have only ever heard the cd before.
It will get a lot of play when i am over this bloody chest infection and my right ear gets sorted.
You might want to order this on cd ?
Get used to it as it will be the next PT double180g vinyl release Pre-order

The Dire Straits set [introduced by Billy Conolly] from the Manella Concert at Wembley many years ago. Was that 1988?
As it goes I was given the ancient C90 cassette tape from the radio by a friend whose brother had taped it those years before. It was a simple type one tape but I had a decent three head machine that made a fair fist of it. There was hiss enough to rip the ears off, but very little pitch instability. At the time [1999] I had Sonic Foundry as software and I set about cleaning the tape sound up. It still sounds great, and on the ESLs sounds better than ever before.
One of those moments in history that make it an unforgatable moment, captured in sound!

Aleg, how'd you get a copy this early? Looking forward to hearing her Gaspard de la unit in particular.

New album from Shearwater. Continuing their good run of form.
