What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

From back in the days of Selling England and Dark Side, Jan Garbarek released Trytykon on ECM.

It is rap.  I can guarantee that there is only one other member on here who would even consider listening to it.

Chief, if you did get and enjoy the Drake album I can recommend this from his Young Money labelmate.

reubs, I'd heard 'Rack City, and found a stream of this after seeing your post, though I didn't get too far with it (and I much prefer Thank Me Later to Take Care, btw.) Don't get me wrong, I can still listen to new stuff, but not much. Keep 'em coming though.

I struggle to listen to plenty of albums and mixtapes all the way through these days - Danny Brown's, The-Dream's as Terius Nash, and just about everything Odd Future, as recent examples - but almost all have some great beats. Have you seen the (terrible/inspired) video for 'Rella' ? Domo and Hodgy aren't holding back, but that boy Tyler...

....is on some other level, right?

It is madness. Odd Future vol. 2 should be good.

If you haven't, check MellowHype "BlackendWhite", though I think you have to pay for it now, not download it. Maybe the best of OFWKTA along with Bastard.

Listening to the Schlohmo remix of Drake/Weeknd 'Crew Love'. So, so good.

reubs, I'll have to look up the MellowHype as I don't think I've heard it. I downloaded some Odd Future releases around when Nostalgia, Ultra dropped last year (just before the Goblin hype kicked in) but that wasn't one of them, and I probably only played stuff like Earl and Bastard a couple of times.

'Earl' (the song) and Tyler and Hodgy's 'Sandwitches' are probably my favourites of what I know  - look up Sandwitches live on Jimmy Fallon if you haven't seen it, with The Roots as his house band and Mos Def getting excited.

(Oh, and this reply would've showed up about an hour ago, but I deleted it while trying to edit our posts to keep down the number of coked-up centaurs on this page. Hoop.la, schmoop.la)

First play of the yellow vinyl (2LP). Absolutely wonderful Gatefold from Svart Records. I'm so obsessed with this band, I ordered the black vinyl version as well !!!
