Question in buying a used Qute

Posted by: QoS on 04 January 2012

Hi everyone, I am buying a recently used Qute (june 2011), saving 45% from a new one. I have seen the posts related to the Qute upgrade (and its highcost) and what worries my most is the Apple Lossless compatibility.
I have a good amount of Apple Lossless files, that I can convert to wav or flac, but would it be the same in terms of file management through itunes (on which I am heavily depending on)?
And can I just stream my apple lossless from my Mac to the Qute?in this case will I loose the Dac capabilities of the Qute?
I am not into sacd so I do not care about 256khz streaming.
I am buying music from itunes but that as far as I know is low quality non Apple Lossless
What is your advice?

Thank you

I stream lossless to the Qute without any problems. If you are streaming via wireless then you need to get a UPnP server on your Mac. I use EyeConnect for which there is a trial version that times out to leave just audio file streaming (just what you need so its essentially free). The software converts the lossless to wav while streaming so you need do nothing with your file formats.

QoS,

I bought a used Qute, and I stream from my iMac to my rounter to the Qute. I use Playback for UPnP duties. I also tried Majestic and EyeConnect, but I have had much better success with Playback.

I rip CD's in iTunes using the WAV encoder, with the 'auto' setting on. Purchased songs from Apple come in as AAC and they stream perfectly. WAV files and MP3's also stream without a problem, and artwork seems to come through most of the time, though it does depend whether I'm looking at 'albums' or 'artists' or 'genres' in n-Stream. I did start with AIFF formating for ripped songs, but they did not stream with Playback, although Majestic and EyeConnect seemed to play them sometimes.

I think that you need to go through a router of some sort, but I could be mistaken about that. The router does also (I think) give you access to iRadio and FM.

BTW I am really pleased with the sound quality I get.
