A fan of E.S.T. any new trios which I should check out ?

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 18 January 2012

I am fan of E.S.T. and like their specific new approach to trio jazz. Any suggestions besides the obvious ones: Neil Cowley, Tritochomy, FM Trio ?

+1  To the above two albums by our Fred.

Both are very good and worth a listen. (only one on vinyl though.)

Convinced, just ordered Dreamhouse from Fred Simon. Received the new Portico Quartet One - quite new style, awaiting Neil Cowley's new one.....

Thanks for all kind contributions..

Any chance of you getting to the UK for a gig or two in 2012?

Hi Stu,

I never mind you asking, I just wish I could make it happen single-handedly, but I need help and lots of it.

Right now I'm trying to see if I can line up a gig in Paris for the first week in April ... my wife and daughter and I will be there celebrating 25 years of marriage, and we wouldn't think of not taking our daughter; she's always wanted to see Paris. But she only has a week off school, so unfortunately no plans to visit across the Channel this time.

Thanks for your persistence!

All the best,

Fred

Thanks again, Stu! This one is my current favorite (and the most recent). But not a trio, of course.

As to what comes next, I always have lots of music ready to record, just need the opportunity. And these days, unfortunately, opportunities are becoming more scarce.

All the best,

Fred

Bert, slightly off-topic but you may be interested to know that there is a new EST album coming out in April - to be called "301" I believe.

It is culled from the last sessions the trio recorded before Esbjorn died. It was played to me last night and it is really something quite special.

Kevin - do you know Burkhard?

Hi Adrian - no is the short answer! I do however know a couple of reasonably big cheeses in the jazz world. It was played to me when I went round to dinner at one of their houses on Saturday. I can't wait for the album to come out.

Intersestingly enough, it seems that the jazz world is still reeling from Esbjorn's death - the EST were so good, and had such enormous (commercial and artistic) potential and were regarded as the most important jazz act in the world. Nobody has come forward to replace them as yet.

Thanks Kevin. I am looking forward to this album but will try not to get my expectations too high yet as  their last album from the same sessions was my least favourite.

I was listening to E.S.T yesterday with a friend and the comment was made that they really sounded as if it was just one individual playing, a totally cohesive unit that somehow did not seem like a trio, so in synch with each other. As you say, no band is taking the crown from them and they are sorely missed but their influence is all over the place with many of the bands currently mentioned in this thread.

I am delighted that the band feel ready to release some archive stuff now, it must have been emotional.

I met Siggi Loch, the owner of ACT Music a few years ago and he suggested to me that he also had a solo Esbjorn Svensson recording in the can. I hope that gets to see light of day sometime in the near future also.

Thoroughly enjoying some new listening prompted by some of the suggestions. Started my Fred Simon collection off with Dreamhouse and Remember The River- just the ticket to accompany a glass or 2 of winter warmer. It seems no one has mentioned James Pearsons Trio. James is now musical director at Ronnie scotts but tours extensively, see his website for various projects http://www.jamespearsonmusic.com/. To my knowledge he has 2 albums on release both recorded prior to the untimely death of his drummer Chris Dagley. Some really excellent work and a great listen.

Hi Kevin,

I already heard from this one coming, and I am looking forward to it. While I am waiting I am enjoying the new Neil Cowley Tri album, quite interesting stuff.

Thanks for the very kind words; so glad you dig the music.

Even though it's not a trio, I think you'll also enjoy my most recent album on the Naim label, Since Forever.

All the best,

Fred
