Further software updates to Naim servers?

Posted by: Jason on 19 January 2012

I'm just curious to know if there may be anything further in the pipeline in the way of updates for the Naim servers, HDX, US etc.

I'm wondering if there would be any possibility of a tick box selection against each track/album so it could be selected or de-selected from normal play when random playlists, for example, are selected.

One reason I'm hoping this may become a reality is so that music I have ripped to my HDX can be stored but chosen as to whether I want it to play or not, (Christmas music for example).  At present, I have to dig out Christmas music and then delete it again after Christmas has passed, so I'm not listening to it all year round!

Also, probably a lot more complicated and less likely to be possible, but volume equalisation for all music stored, as some newer albums recorded levels are much louder than many older recordings.  This can be quite a contrast when playing varying music in a playlist!

Just a couple of things I would love to see on my HDX to make it even more "complete".

Wondering whether such updates are ever likely to be possible?

Jason,

For your Christmas music, if you have a NAS drive, create a music store, transfer all your Xmas music to it and activate it on not.

This is where iTunes gets very clever. The "genius" playlists are not random but use an online database and algorithm to create a list of similar tunes. It actually works very well.

I find truly random playlists to be jarring and annoying as the music switches too dramatically. Cara Dillon followed by System of a Down anybody?

Afraid I don't have a nas. I take it though that if I did, the only control would be to isolate the nas as a whole and that I still would not have the option of controlling individual tracks?

Two HDX upgrades that I would appreciate:

If you're controlling it via Ipod or Ipad and you're playing something, you can pause it or you can switch to something else but you can't just stop the thing that's playing if, say, you're going out or up to bed.  The only way to do stop what's playing is to go to the HDX and press clear playlist on the front.  (Or there's a fiddly workaround for the Ipod or Ipad which is to switch to internet radio and then switch that off, which you can do).  I realise that this means a change in the App rather than in the HDX itself.

The other thing is an alarm, so that you can set the HDX to play internet radio or something else from a set time.

If you control the HDX via iPod or iPad, you can tick on the cover art in the right top corner. From there, you can select all tracks and delete them. Same thing as the "Clear Playlist" you've mentioned...

I'm asking this for a very long time now:

One thing I would really appreciate would be an "ignore prefixes when sorting by artist" function. I like to see a band called "The Smiths" showing up under "S" rather than "T" without renaming them into: "Smiths, The".

Even my iPod does that...

The update I would appreciate the most would be to open a folder in the internal storage for downloads. I would not need a NAS or a running computer at least as long as the storage capacity suffices.

A decent on-screen keyboard instead of this dial pad for text-entry; there is enough space on the display.

Ah, I think I understand this now, having re-read it in a different light and looking at the Network stores options on the HDX!

With a NAS device, you can create various seperate music stores within a single NAS device?  Therefore you can select whether you want certain stores within the NAS to be active or not.

Thats a thought and an option, thanks.
