Football....What team do you support ??

Posted by: mista h on 23 January 2012

Would love to hear from as many people as pos on this one, including supporters of Non League sides. Lets have any interesting stories from over the  years, the ups and downs, the good bad and the ugly.

I will start the ball rolling and get ready for any abuse that may come my way !!!!

I watched my 1st game at Fulham back in 1954 when the old man took me. He is 86 now but still has his season ticket, and we have both clocked up the Air Miles watching the girls play in europe and little old Fulham getting to the Europa league final in Hamburg.

Something that i still remember from the 70s is a guy that always stood in front of us at home games, smoked Senior Service plain. Always arrived smoking and smoked non stop for 2hrs,never used a lighter,he would just light one cigarette off the other....Yuk

Favorite away grounds.....Spurs and Chelsea, and best of all Villa Park.

Least favorite away grounds.....Newcastle and Old Trafford.

Only problem in our household is my son in law, also a season ticket holder......but at the mob down the road CHELSEA.

My first football match was also at Fulham, my uncle who lived locally took me that would have been in the '50s also, all I can remember is that Johnny Haynes was playing.

If I support anyone like your son in law it's Chelsea. Brentford and Crawley Town are also supported in the family.

Born in Wolverhampton*, my father is Billy Wright's cousin. Not much choice. It's a hard cross to bear most of the time. Bit of a fair weather supporter to be honest, and the Venn diagrams of Wolves and Fair Weather don't intersect much, or often.
Still, 22 points to go!

*my parents had the exquisite charm to move when I was six months old, thus saving me from growing up with a Blek Countraiy accent. Although it was to Sarf East Larndun, so all is not entirely forgiven.

My first football match was 7th October 1972, also in West London, QPR 4-0 Carlisle in the old second division. My Dad took me along and we watched Martyn Busby score a hat-trick for Rangers. They were promoted that season and it was the beginning of a golden era for them, culminating in their second place finish in 1976.

Bowles, Givens, Francis, Thomas, Masson, Parkes, Gillard, Clement, Mclintock, Webb, Hollins.......

Ah, those were the days!

I am a Crewe Alexandra supporter and have been watching them since 1982. That was the season before Dario Gradi arrived to completely transform the fortunes of what had become a laughing stock in league football.

There have been many ups and downs in that time culminating in Dario giving up the reins for the 3rd and final time last November following a 3-0 reverse at home to Torquay.Under new boss Steve Davis we are currently on a decent run and heading for the play offs?

In tandem with all the matches has been the satisfaction of seeing the results of our youth policy pay dividends and keep the club going. Watching the likes of David Platt, Rob Jones, Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson, Rob Hulse and Dean Ashton play for the Alex has been hugely enjoyable.  The next talent to emerge is England U16 international Nick Powell who is on a blistering run of form; I hope we can keep onto him for the remainder of this season.

As chance would have it we went to the ticket office yesterday and got our 2 tickets for when we play at your place. Managed to wangle front row seats upper tier so that no one can stand up in front of us. The old chap cannot stand for 90 minutes these days.

Danny Murphy has been a great servant to Fulham, but sadly he is now reaching his sell by date, struggles to do 90 minutes.

Ipswich Town - we play like a team that has aspirations to be a non-league side

we are still suffering from RK syndrome

- Keane the man who sold Jordan Rhodes {lack of goal scoring potential)

> The next talent to emerge is

hmmm tricky .....

As for Fulham, they nicked our goalie - mind you they are welcome to him.

Could we borrow Clint Dempsey?

I remember the great days of Roy Bailey, Larry Carberry, John Compton, Billy Baxter, Andy Nelson, John Elsworthy, Roy Stephenson, Doug Moran, Ray Crawford, Ted Phillips, Jimmy Leadbetter

And Sir Alf Ramsay who achieved the greatest thing ever accomplished in British football - the Tractor Boys winning the First Division (Premier League) in 61/62. Not sure what Sir Alf did after leaving Portman Road ....

Nottingham Forest , I am a glory hunter .

My first football match was actually Lincoln city v i have no idea who  , on boxing day about 1975 /76. my main memory it was freezing and going to the chippie on the way home.  i was then taken to Leicester city v spurs in i think 1976 also . a great game sitting on the old wooden stands at filbert street .

Then i saw  Sir Brian Cloughs Forest win the European Cup Final in 1978/79  ( on the telly ) and as an impresionable 11 year old i was hooked. Then followed 20 plus years of watching great teams playing great football with the odd trophy thrown in .

sadly all good things come to an end and the "Glory " days seem a life time away currently as we look forward to another spell in the third tier. . Our fall from grace is well documented but it is always good asking how many european cups have you got to Chelsea , spurs, arsenal, man city fans etc who get a bit to big for there boots occasionally.

Have to ask what didnt you like about Stockdale(you may be getting him back soon) played a blinder for us just before christmas @ Chelsea.

As regards Demps......Guy who sits behind us(loud mouth) at every home game he shouts at Dempsey to try working up a sweat. Have to say he can be a bit of a lazy sod at times but of late he is sticking the ball in the back of the net, and that what counts.

Nottingham Forest. Another glory hunter.

First watched in european cups in late 70's early 80's at the age of 9/ 10. Supported them since, through good and bad. Really bad at the moment. Although we have won more european cups than most of, not all the southern teams put together.

I think we need to see Nigel Clough or Martin O'Neill at the helm.

Regards,

I hope we aren't embarrassed again in the return! 6-0 really stung!

As luck would have it I have received a few emails on this particular affliction recently, with some helpful recommendations of products to cure it. I'm ok for now, but I can pass them on to you if you like!

Stockdale let in far too many goals - since our basic tactics are to play 0-8-2 - we need an outstanding keeper .... He had a few off days, usually Saturday afternoon.

Well, if we're talking soccer, we have a nephew who's a professional player, so in the last few years it's been Perth Glory, North Queensland Fury, Sparta Rotterdam and currently Wellington Phoenix, who are going quite ok in the Aussie/NZ A League this season, actually winning a few away games, including last Friday night in my home town. Had front row seats for that, still deaf in the right ear from my wife's, er, gentle encouragement.

If rugby league then of course the mighty Balmain Tigers for the last fifty or so years, premiers in 1969 and 2005. The black and gold never fold.

Middlesbrough for me (as I was born there).

I'm not sure it was the first match I ever attended, but a very early memory was watching them play Burnley at Ayresome Park.  Burnley's centre forward was Ray Hankin, and I remember him rising to a header, and aiming it down to the goalie's feet (as is/was taught as good technique) only for the ball to bounce back up and over the bar.  It might well have been in Jack Charlton's days in charge.

Some good memories in recent years - a couple of trips to Wembley, one to the Millenium Stadium and one over to Holland for the UEFA Cup final.

Danny Murphy is the probably the best player I have seen play for us. His influence was enormous, particularly when he came back from Liverpool on loan for a spell in 1998-99. We were in the bottom three of the Championship and favourites to go down and in his 16 matches accrued enough points to finish 18th.

Still looks a good player on Match of the Day, perhaps that's an advantage of highlights programmes?

West Ham for me (been a season ticket holder for more years than I can remember). Sometimes I wonder why I bother, I really do...

First game I went to was in the very late 1960s, IIRC. My Dad took me and I think it was a game against Charlton (we won) - I do remember the great Bobby Moore was still playing for us then.

....Sunderland Association Football Club .....being born and bred in the shadows of Roker Park (England's loudest crowd) It was a no brainer that I'd become a fervent Mackem!

...Taken by my dad for the only time in 1964 to see us beat Norwich in the Football League Cup - I was hooked and have only missed around 6 home games since 1970 ...highlight was obviously the 73 cup win ...but with Martin O'Neil finally fufilling his destiny and becoming our manager surely only good times await?

..and if any of our players fails to make the grade we can always give Ipswich a ring!

I see your playing the team from the Costa Del Smoggy today....good luck.

Our Dickson Etuhu came from Sunderland......would you like him back ?

The national team, England. It saves me paying attention for more than say four or six games every four years!

For a year I lived on Clarence Rd in Manchester...walking out of the back gates led directly (and I mean *directly) to Man. City Main road field-all of maybe 50 meters away from my bedroom. Used to go in for free at halftime on several occasions, but never really supported any particular team. I was there for the semi-famous match against Luton whereby City lost and got demoted to the 2nd division. The post game 'activities' were more memorable than the match itself.

Jack Collback is not up to much ... so might as well send him and Connor Wickham back to Portman Road  Come on ... we need the points more than you.
