Football....What team do you support ??
Posted by: mista h on 23 January 2012
Would love to hear from as many people as pos on this one, including supporters of Non League sides. Lets have any interesting stories from over the years, the ups and downs, the good bad and the ugly.
I will start the ball rolling and get ready for any abuse that may come my way !!!!
I watched my 1st game at Fulham back in 1954 when the old man took me. He is 86 now but still has his season ticket, and we have both clocked up the Air Miles watching the girls play in europe and little old Fulham getting to the Europa league final in Hamburg.
Something that i still remember from the 70s is a guy that always stood in front of us at home games, smoked Senior Service plain. Always arrived smoking and smoked non stop for 2hrs,never used a lighter,he would just light one cigarette off the other....Yuk
Favorite away grounds.....Spurs and Chelsea, and best of all Villa Park.
Least favorite away grounds.....Newcastle and Old Trafford.
Only problem in our household is my son in law, also a season ticket holder......but at the mob down the road CHELSEA.

Apologies for the delayed response. It's hard to know where to begin really. Wrexham were a bit of a nothing team until the arrival of two people really. One was Alvan Williams and the other was John Neal. The Neal era started the modern story of Wrexham were he produced over a decade what was inarguably what Bill Shankly described as the greatest football team he'd ever seen outside the old Division One. This was a team that produced Mickey Thomas and he wasn't even the best player. That was Graham Whittle by the way.
Neal left us for Boro after a legendary failed attempt at promotion from the old D3 (we needed 2 point from 4 games and failed to get them). He went on to manage Chelsea and gets little credit for laying the foundations of the modern day Chelsea. Probably the most under-rated English manager ever:
We were promoted to D2 the next season and it all fell apart over the next few years with injuries; poor financial decisions and so on. The great cup runs of the 70s (quarter finalists in the Cup Winners Cup losing 1-2 to the great Anderlecht team that thrashed all but us on their way to winning the cup) were a thing of the past by the mid 80s as we went into free fall with only an incredible win against reigning European Cup Holders Porto to sustain us.
The 90s brought the Flynn era which I'm sure many of you will know all about. Something resembling stability under the chairimanship of Pryce Griffiths until the wheels same off in 2002.
What happened when Griffiths sold to one Mark Guterman is probably best documented on the fantastic 200% web site. I couldn't even begin to document it here and, if you take the time to read it, you'll find yourself both crying with tragi-comic laughter and shedding some tears too. Words fail me.
I'd love to say it has a happy ending. We're not quite there yet but whether we best the moneybags of Fleetwood Town and make it back into the Football League or not this is a season that will go down in Wrexham legend.
A team of misfits assembled by the arrogant and ultimately humbled Dean Saunders failed at the play off stage last season but performed miracles to get there under owners whose behaviour was nothing short of disgraceful. After not being paid several teams and seen the Crusaders Rugby League team, with whom we allegedly ground shared, go into administration under the same ownership of ourselves the players could have all legally and morally walked away.
All bar one stayed. People talk about team spirit but for the most part in modern sport that's nonsense. This team is the first time I have ever seen it, in spades. I have truly never seen anything like it. We have the best defence in the top 5 divisions although we've just lost Curtis Obeng to Swansea and captains all over the pitch. When we can play we do and when we can't or it just isn't happening we dig in and get a result.
Saunders walked to Doncaster and Andy Morrell stepped up. 1 loss in 4 months says it all really. Even losing Obeng hasn't phased us and when was the last time you saw a player walk out mid season on a promotion chasing club and go with nothing but love and best wishes from everyone?
I took my son to a game a season from when he was one. He saw but won't remember out last game in the football league. He is now 6 and has done at least 10 home games this season. We took Brighton to penalties in the FA Cup 4th round and we went to both games. Premier League teams truly don't get the magic of the FA Cup if you could have seen our faces at Brighton at the final whistle...
That game also rekindled our love affair with the FA Cup ( everyone cites Arsenal '92 but what about Spurs, Newcastle, Ipswich, Birmingham and West Ham) but also with Brighton who, at our lowest ebb, brought 500+ fans to North Wales for a red card protest and Fans United day when they were playing at home. The FA Cup game was a celebration of us now being under fan ownership and them having finally secured a home (and an incredible one at that). My son will remember that day for as long as he lives and so will I.
I fully appreciate why the likes of Bruce don't like football. There is much to dislike but ja story like ours couldn't be made up and, as with all Welsh sport, my son will be a better person for learning to survive the lows and lose with dignity then he ever would supporting a top end Premier League club. Do we aspire to be there? Of course we do but it's about the dreams your club can give you not the money.
Sorry for withering on. Please go research the story of our last decade. You will see elements of it at places like Rangers and Portsmouth and Cardiff and Leeds but our version is unique. I suppose it could be summarised as what happens when the biggest asset you own is your ground but even that doesn't begin to describe it.
To finish on a positive note - the Racecourse is the oldest international ground in the world. The Supporters Trust are in the process of reverting the club to Wrexham AFC to right a further wrong if our spell in administration. The badge is being redone and in the process it has been discovered that we may well be the third oldest football club in the world.
Actually, to end on a funny note. Brightens stadium; staff and fans are unbelievable, even if the team reflect Poyet and are skilful but niggly. At the game at their place their fans wore our shirts and sang our songs. Vice verse. During a rare lull in the racket a section of our fans still found time to sing "Shit ground, no fans!" to much mirth.
Anyway, enough.

I believe I'm not allowed to post links else I'd post an amazing link to a blog about the Wrexham badge. It's beginning to look highly likely we're the third oldest club on the planet.

Excellent stuff Mike, it's these sorts of stories of love for a smaller club that really sum up what supporting a club means.
I can remember my lad getting stick at school for supporting Brentford, plus the usual "who?" or they ain't in the premiership etc.
There are quite a few cases of clubs coming back from the brink, so you never know whats in store.

Thanks.
Used to play football regularly in Salford in my Wrexham shirt. Used to get kids coming up to in the middle of a game with "Is that the new United sponsor?
It was obviously a red shirt and it said "Wrexham Lager"
This coming weekend we're going to Wembley to see the Carling Cup final courtesy of a Cardiff loving friend. Boy seems more excited about going to see Stockport v Wrexham the day before

i have enjoyed reading this Mike, thanks for taking the time to type it up. My own view is the FA should pump more cash into clubs in the lower divisions. The likes of Tevez & Co being paid MEGA,MEGA wages and throwing a wobly just because something is not to their liking makes me bloody mad. Have just read the Wrexham story on the Wikipedia website.

Milan AC here.I like soccer,I think i have a civil behaviour,I can discuss with other persons who support other teams in a quiet way.I just end discussion and go away when I see other people are too stupid, violent, and too much"fan".

.....Very good read Mike ...I remember May 5th 1979 at The Racecourse in Div 2 ...we won 2-1 with a last minute goal in front of approx 10.000 Mackems (inc me) in the ground (ok I admit I did check the date out) only to lose out on promotion by 2 points that season .....I note you finished 15th that season. jeez where did the time go?
.....Meanwhile I've just returned from The Stadium Of Light having seen the Gooners sent back down south with their metaphorical tails between their legs ..... too early to dream of a date at Wembley in May?
Posted on: 18 February 2012 by Mike Hughes
I think that season was our highest ever finish. We never really showed what we could do that season. Lost Mickey T to United and gained.... a nice new stand for the away fans and Frank Carrodus
Lost Whittle to injury and Shinton to City. Most people know where Dai Davies and Joey Jones went.

My team is the Swedish team GAIS from Gothenburg. We have had a couple of English players such as Gary Brook, James Keene and now Calum Angus.

Since January Fernando Torres has had more managers than goals.
This maybe should be in Jokes, but will probably be lost in translation.

Hi Clay
Sorry for not posting more, becoming a dad, then doing three of the hardest months of work I have ever done, right in the middle of the football season, didn't leave me much time for the forum.
Tebow is interesting, and more than that the Broncos new defence is very interesting.
I know what you mean about Sundays, I just start thinking, well only a few months until September. I do have cricket to keep me going (the sumer game as it is known here).
We should start a new NFL, or perhaps US sports thread soon, and leave what is called football in the UK to those who love it.

My real home team is Eintracht Frankfurt, but here in the UK I always supported the Gunners.

Reading, nearest league team to Windsor where I grow up.
Nice to see them putting a late charge for promotion.

The first game I attended at Goodison Park was in the late 50's in the Boys Pen,Everton lost 3-1 to Leicester City. I should have ended the affair there and then!

Hi Oscillate,
I see there are four meanings in Italian for "brats".Please help me to improve my English and tell me what you actually ment.Thank you.:-)
Posted on: 16 March 2012 by OscillateWildly
Hello Fabio 1,
I'm using brats to mean badly behaved children.
I don't like it when players put what they want ahead of performance; recent examples at team level - Liverpool/Hodgson and Chelsea/AVB.
Cheers,
OW
