Football....What team do you support ??

Posted by: mista h on 23 January 2012

Would love to hear from as many people as pos on this one, including supporters of Non League sides. Lets have any interesting stories from over the  years, the ups and downs, the good bad and the ugly.

I will start the ball rolling and get ready for any abuse that may come my way !!!!

I watched my 1st game at Fulham back in 1954 when the old man took me. He is 86 now but still has his season ticket, and we have both clocked up the Air Miles watching the girls play in europe and little old Fulham getting to the Europa league final in Hamburg.

Something that i still remember from the 70s is a guy that always stood in front of us at home games, smoked Senior Service plain. Always arrived smoking and smoked non stop for 2hrs,never used a lighter,he would just light one cigarette off the other....Yuk

Favorite away grounds.....Spurs and Chelsea, and best of all Villa Park.

Least favorite away grounds.....Newcastle and Old Trafford.

Only problem in our household is my son in law, also a season ticket holder......but at the mob down the road CHELSEA.

Me neither, excellent result despite JT.

A Wrexham reserve team beat Newport in the Welsh derby tonight. Anyone know of any other team that accrued 95 points and still didn't get promoted?
Posted on: 24 April 2012 by mista h

Tonight i have to do something that i am going to hate big time. The son in law gets back from Barcelona late this evening and i have been told by the other half that i must phone him and say well done and all that coblers.

Another twist to last nights Chelsea game. Just been talking to my Rich neighbour(a plumber),who is not a happy Bunny.

Turns out last week he placed a bet with a local bookie,£100 @ 10-1 for Chelsea to win last nite.

He went to collect his winnings this morning but the bookie would NOT pay out. He made his bet for Chelsea to WIN,whilst they are thru to the Champions league final last night they only DREW....so in a nutshell no payout.

I think it was very uncharitable of our West London neighbours. Our goal difference with Wigan has had a reversal of 9!

I mean, we let Torres double his goal tally for the last 2 seasons and you practically send us down!

Not very neighbourly!

I think having Hodgson as the England manager will end in tears, never rated the guy in the 2 years he was with us. I wont say he moves around a lot but he keeps Pickfords on a retainer.

As for QPR i will feel sorry for the fans if they go down. If it happens you  have several players on big money which aint good. I can see Mark(i wanna manage a big club) Hughes making a quick exit and going with him will be Bobby( ive lost my dummy) Zamora.

The best 1-0 result of the year imo.

Stu.

So our old manager is now the England manager. I give it 2 years max.

Still its more work for Pickfords.

Brisbane Roar

Australian A-League champions 2011 & 2012, just tonight went down to 8th placed J-league's Tokyo FC 2 - 4 in the ACL.  We dominated possession and play an attacking style but suffered on the counter attack as per usual.  Watching the top European leagues its clear that we don't make the same grade, but we do ok and have been improving. We need to keep improving!

I don't believe that board at QPR ... they surely will sack Hughes.

I think the Rs need to return to being the club their supporters want to support.

Perhaps I misread it, but to me it is the owners who are to blame.

Great choice in my view - 10,000,000,000,000 times better than the last one ... whoever he was,

I think Sparky is a good manager and did a good job whilst he was at FFC,better than the Dutch guy we have now.

His trouble was he kept getting his head stuck every time he walked  thru a door.

Confused face: Sparky - decent but not great manager. Very similar to Hodgson in that he has one way of playing and that's it. Achilles heel is that he selects experience out of position rather than inexperience in position when there is an injury/suspension. Jol - hardly a failure at Spurs and tasked with keeping Fulham in the Prem whilst culling the wage bill. Zamora to QPR being but one example of that and a sound piece of business. Getting little credit for bringing the best out of Dempsey either. Had a good season. Hodgson - rarely gets credit over here. Has to be remembered that he rescued a Blackburn team from relegation and then lost a power battle against the owners who listened far too much to senior pros the following season. Not dissimilar to the crap he had to deal with at Liverpool. Credentials for the England job are exemplary and, if you ever watched his Swiss team, you won't exactly be dismayed at his appointment. Got to deal with a short term crisis but if anyone can... Redknapp - been in court and somehow escaped. Made to look ludicrous and so lacking in self awareness that you'd have to be naive to believe he wouldn't create at least one big problem for the FA during his tenure. His football teams are decent but his much vaunted man management skills have yet to produce a Spurs player who has a whole decent season as opposed to half of one. His transfer market dealings raise more questions than answers and he's won nothing compared to Hodgson. If you want some hot tips then look out for Andy Morrell at Wrexham (although I would say that) but also Keith Hill at Barnsley. I suspect Hill will be the next great English manager and most of you fixated on the Prem probably haven't even heard of him. Watch this space. Now, Yoirk v Mansfield. A proper game.

Martin Joel has got you to eighth in the league and winning at places like Anfield ..... seems good to me, be careful what you wish for or you could get Roy Keane . It's taken PJ eighteen months to undo the damage he did .... but we are improving

I'd have gone for Nigel Adkins, but the FA would never take on someone like that ....

Still at least Roy H is not Cap ... well whoever the last one was (worst manager since Revie)

By the way Roy H has already chosen his England umbrella.

FGR should be in the football league in a couple of years time ....

I would strongly recommend anyone typing such stuff as "FFS" goes and reads the expert analysis in the TwoUnfortunates web site and then hang your head in shame.
Posted on: 02 May 2012 by Mike Hughes
Yes Guido. FGR are about to do a Fleetwood and spend their money. Like Fleetwood I feel sorry for their fans. FTFC claimed to be run along business lines until Pilleys £4m loan came to the fore. The OFGEN stuff means he might want his money back soon and, in a sign of what's to come, they just lost Vardy and Viera in one day! Unfortunately, like FTFC, FGR cannot break even on those crowds and it will end in tears. Living the dream eh!

Hello Mike

A lot of what you say makes sense, like offloading Zamora was a superb move.

However when you watch a team week in week out home AND away you soon see the problems.

Hodgson,,,with him we never used wingers, everything was down the middle.a packed midfield and empty wings.

Jol......does not know how to pick a team.Wont say names as i dont want to be sued, but for several weeks now we have had 2 Donkeys in the side, Its not just me saying this its all over our M/B.

Arry is an East end barry boy, maybe i have  soft spot but i do like him.

My own view is Chairman Mo should never have got rid of Cookie.

I enjoy reading your posts Mike,

Even as a Chelsea fan , I have to say Cissie's goal tonight was amazing:-

Looks like we will just have to win the European Cup then?

Posted on: 02 May 2012 by Mike Hughes
Hodgson - yes, he doesn't value width so he didn't endear himself to Liverpool fans as that's what they'd started to see with Benitez. Ironic that the purchase of Carroll requires width but they still rarely use it. The lack of width works surprisingly well at international level though where teams can generally defend against typical English crosses all night long. Jol - a quick glance at team sheets suggests two obvious names However, one thing I've learnt from following my club is that there's much more to team selection than meets the eye. Our offloading of Lee Fowler to Fleetwood , our only rivals, looks to an outsider utter stupidity. However, once you know a bit more about the players situation it looks incredibly sensible. When players are out of the team there's often much more to it than injuries and suspensions. I think you'll find Jol knows enough of these things to do the best he can with what he has and keep his own counsel on the true state of affairs. Arry - quite like him too. I'm a football fan above all else so I appreciate anyone who wants his teams to play proper football. That said, his away tactics are often poor as per Mancini and his substitutions bewildering periodically. What could I possibly say about his transfer market dealings that hasn't already been said?

Good luck in the play offs at Luton tomorrow, Mike - you deserve to go up - just looking at the points tally shows the gap.
