Porcupine Tree - 'Anesthetize' LIVE
Posted by: apye! on 25 January 2012
I am looking to treat myself to this on vinyl and the cheapest I can find it is around £68 including postage!!
Is it really worth spending this much on one box set?
What is the quality like, up to the usual PT & Tonefloat standard?
As far as the old snap, crackle and pop goes it is a nice well made package.
Guess it all depends on your disposable as to whether it is worth buying......the 24 bit download is £12.00.
Andy,
I put myself through this when the box set came out????????????????
I did see them do it live with a load of forum members.
It was a great day out meal and concert.
I had to buy it because of that .
It is a nice set and it does sound good.
Its up to you man?
Stu.

It is a really well put together package - not a crackle or pop to be had on my copy (naughty Lontano!! - bit of fluff on yer needle??).
Try getting it from Tonefloat direct - should be a bunch cheaper and I have found them very reliable with postage etc.
Cheers

David,
It worked out at more money from them when it came out.
Because of shipping costs.
JPC had a few copies .

On the subject of PT Anesthetize:
From my dodgy memory i recall the first box-sets were only so many with first pressings limited numbers... 500? 2000? (i can't remember how many).
After these sold out, a later batch came along [without the 'limited' number marked on]
Question: where abouts on the first set is the 'limited number' ?

Debs,
What number is under your barcode?
What number is under your barcode?

The other one to the right ?
They are all 112.
Stu.

that's the barcode number, i don't think it has any other number...
has yours got an embosed type of number under the barcode?

The same two numbers here.
Nothing on the cling film and nothing inside the set.
Time to take them to court.
There were only ever meant to be a ltd run of 2,000 according to burningshed
I aint joking.
Some one needs to make a stand.
Stu
Stu, are they on the vinyl matrix code?
I think the ltd number was actually 500
...but i could be wrong.
Perhaps the ones after 500 have the numbers?
Makes it awkward for my cunning plan of leaving it sealed for future investment if the limited first pressings twang can’t be proven...
may have to rip the wrapper seal off and play it... may even enjoy it too.
Life being too short an all...

Stu,
According to the burningshed website it was 'strictly limited to 3000 copies'.
Has this changed from the inital release, also can anyone remember how much it was from burningshed inc postage?
Thanks,
Andy.

Adrian, where did you see the download or are you getting mixed up with Atlanta? I'd like to have a 24bit version too, so I was thinking of getting the DVD and ripping the audio off that, but AFAICT, this does not include Progigal, which rather spoils it for me
Cheers

Andy,
I didn't realise this was going to open up such a debate!!
First up let's look at this limited aspect. This is what it says on the Tonefloat site (and they made the thing):
....."the vinyl set includes a bonus track Prodigal that is not featured in the film, making a total of
2 hours 15 minutes of music across 8 sides of vinyl. This release is strictly limited to 3000 copies only, and will be deleted once sold out. All pre-orders have been shipped"
I got an early copy from Burningshed. It was £58 plus whatever the post was. It had no limited edition number and I don't think any of them did. I reckon the 3,000 copies have mostly sold out now, and that will be that. Burningshed have no more as Stu says.
Second up availability. There are some at JPC.de at c 75 euros. Tonefloat have some at 65 euros which is almost what it was at Burningshed once you convert into sterling. Post is post. I have found them to be great shippers.
And back to your original question? The quality is exemplary. Mastering, pressing, vinyl quality, booklet, packaging - all superb.
Your quote, "Is it really worth spending this much on one box set?"......
I had buyer's remorse when I punched in my credit card details. It went as soon as the needle dropped into the grooves.
But maybe that's just me.
Anyone for a thread - 'How Guilty Should I Feel When I Buy an LP?'
Cheers

Thanks for all the replies guys, I guessed if I don't buy it now it will become increasingly more difficult and expensive.
Order placed with JPC, postage was really expensive through Tonefloat (around 20 eur!)
Really looking forward to receiving it, thanks again.
What did I start??
John
Good point John!!
I've just totted up you owe me about £500 in Wilson related expenditure. You git!!
Actually, I'm very grateful.
Top geezer you are.
David.
He's like that.
Not sure I "get" PT. Which album should I start with?
If you like Pink Floyd ?
I would start with this one.
Then these two.
Not sure I "get" PT. Which album should I start with?
I asked this question a few years ago and found this reply from seagull very useful, I must own around a dozen PT albums now, all on vinyl!!
Early PT - the solo years
On the Sunday of Life - very early musings from Mr Wilson, with him playing all the instruments - remixed versions now include real drums however. Patchy but showed signs of what was to come. Think Barratt period Floyd.
Up the Downstair - More of the same
Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape - This is Extremely rare and completes the set.
PT The band
The Sky Moves Sideways - again largely Steven Wilson solo but some telling contributions from the others who were to form the touring band. This is really the album that can be compared to Waters/Gilmour Floyd it is PT's proggyest album.
Signify - The first proper PT album with the four members all making major contributions. This album including 'Waiting' which is one of the finest songs ever written!
Coma Divine - Live album from the Signify tour. Simply one of the best live albums recorded by anyone, ever.
Stupid Dream - More song based than before
Heavy PT
In Absentia - the first signs of the new, heavy PT, bigger sound but with some harmonies to die for.
Deadwing - Not as consistent but has the epic 'Arriving Somewhere' as it's centrepiece
Fear of a Blank Planet - more heaviness but more focused than Deadwing.
Miscellaneous
Metanoia - Improvisations from the signify sessions. Probably my least often played PT album
Recordings - floor sweepings and leftovers from various sessions. This is not a coherent album in the way most of the others are but it contains some of PTs finest songs and is among my favourite albums.
Voyage 34 - a fine mood piece, originally released as a 34 minute single - expanded to about an hour and very good it is too.
Warsawa - a live recording for a radio show in Poland. Slightly dry sound but very good.
We Lost The Skyline - A recent live recording from a record shop in the states. Some very good versions of OT songs rarely heard live.
Missing
Finally an admission... I don't own all of PT's records (yet) Lightbulb Sun is on order on heavy Vinyl so that's coming soon.
Steven Wilson doesn't seem to have it in him to produce a poor album. His production values are high and the quality of the packaging is as good as any I have in my collection. If you're a vinyl junkie the LPs are always beautifully presented.
So a recommendation? Hard to say really, not knowing your other preferences. If you like the heavier side then go for the later stuff, otherwise I'd say Coma Divine, What I can predict though is that if you like what you hear you will soon own quite a number of the above.
Ta muchly for the advice. Let the journey begin!
