Hi folks,
I'm totally impressed by G.Sokolov- this piano player was new to me and after 5min (playing some Chopin in radio) he got me....
How is the quality of his recordings? Any experience (noisy, lush etc)?
Many thanks,
Ralf

Hi Ralf,
Sokolov is a regular visitor to our corner of the world - he's due to appear in Frankfurt in February, and he's coming to Amsterdam in May. That may be your best bet as he doesn't like to record - although Naive has issued a number of live albums. I haven't heard those so can't comment on the sound.
Cheers,
EJ

Hi there,
I have all those recordings just mentioned by EJ and can assure you that there is nothing which should put you off. The audiences tend to be very well behaved and the sound generally is always OK, even if not of studio quality. On his Brahms disc, the Opus 10 Ballades sound at a lower recording level than the sonata, but they are still perfectly acceptable.
And you are quite right -- he is one of the pianistic wonders of the age. Don't hesitate.

........ 10 CDs, available from the UK amazon site for pennies under £35, which is hardly a big investment. Let us know what you think.
