New NDS Streamer
Posted by: 0rangutan on 30 January 2012
See Doug Graham interview on the audiostream.com site:
"In February we will launch our top-of-the-line NDS streaming network player at the Bristol Sound and Vision Show".
The web site is live Hook. Look here. But the image is not better than the one on WhatHifi. Must wait for the manual I guess.

Is the UPnP streaming spec up to 24/192 ? It's a bit ambiguous on the web site.
Edit: Sorry, my fault. It is 24/192 as stated under "Features":
Internal architecture for high-resolution playback of audio up to 24bit/192kHz over the network

Yes...

Thanks Phil. Sorry, corrected above.

No worries...

Silly question, but I'm going to ask it... does it have transit screws?

Yup...

I sold my Naim stuff because of trafo humming, so my question would be: did you change the trafo design for PSUs?
Well that was worth taking a half day off for! Shame we haven't heard more from the folks at the show, but I'm sure the forum will overflow later today. Thanks, Phil, for taking the sensible and the not so sensible questions! I've just written a confirmation order to my dealer, so now comes the l o n g wait (memories of my HDX order come back to me). Roger.
Hi Phil
Answer on the DAC section is fine, thanks. And the webpage is up now, good stuff & well done Naim
Back to PSU options, on the 'Features' page I quote:-
'Performance upgradable through the use of two Burndy interconnects with one 555 PS power supply or the addition of a second power supply which must be the 555 PS'
Confused
Allen
Badly worded but basically to use the NDS you must have one power supply to start off with ...
...then you can upgrade its performance you can *ADD* a power supply which can either be a 555PS using both of its outputs or you can add a second power supply but that must be a 555PS to drive the analogue side.

I'm disappointed we haven't heard more from the show - to be quite honest with you I think the thing sounds so bloody good that I was expecting a real gushing outburst from people having heard it...

Hi T38.45 -
I can empathize, as I sit very close to my racks. But a single Isotek Syncro made a world of difference for me. Now have zero hum, with no audible impact on sound quality. My Syncro currently feeds a CablePro Integrity distribution block, but in the not too distant, it will be replaced with an Audience PDU.

Ii thought you could use different combinations but the PS powering the 'Analogue Burndy' input must be a 555PS as this is the only supply that has this output.

Doh - as Phil has just said.
Hi Phil, are this real pictures of the NDS front on the Naim webpage. I'm asking because the position of the Wifi antenna doesn't match the position of the port on the back.
If you read it with the sentence just above:
- External power supply required. Compatible with XP5 XS, XPS or 555 PS power supplies
- Performance upgradable through the use of two Burndy interconnects with one 555 PS power supply or the addition of a second power supply which must be the 555 PS
As I understand it, that would mean:
- You can use it with one power supply, be it XP5 XS, XPS2 or 555PS, with one Burndy for connection, and the link plug on;
- Or, only if you have the 555PS, you can remove the link plug and connect the second outlet to the 555PS with a second Burndy;
- Or, regardless of what PS you have in the first place, you can remove the link plug and add a second power supply which must be a 555PS.
PPS - Actually, I may just have to take a flyer on this one and place the order. I cannot imagine the NDS not living up to expectations....at least for those of us lucky to be 555PS owners, and with both NDX and DAC ready for trade-in!
I believe there's a queue already, Hook ! (welcome to the queue)
Congrats RJ!! Looking forward to you starting the first NDS owner's thread!
I do hope will put an NDS on a westbound airplane in May...but I am betting that UK orders will take priority, and my wait will be a lot longer than yours. Oh well, I guess I'll have to just bear up under the strain, and rough it out with my NDX->DAC/555PS for a few extra weeks or months. Poor me.

The wifi antenna is a through panel connector that is not yet "fixed" for position - it is quite possible that the front and rear shots are taken from different prototypes.

Thanks Maurice! Good enough of a picture to just make out what's what.
I see no surprises (compared to the NDX's back panel).

BINGO!!!!
Please move to the head of the class and collect a lollipop from teacher before playtime...
(Edited to add : "Of course you would have to be slightly insane to use a single 555PS and only connect it through the "digital" Burndy..." )
Phil
Thanks Phil. Very exited to hear the NDS.
From what I understand, this probably is the no-holds-barred approach to digital playback [non-CD] that we have been waiting for from Naim.
Though it is too rich for me, even so, I would love to have the chance to audition this one!

Thank you Master. May I have a green one with two sticks ?

Hi Phil
Don't be too disappointed that we aren't all singing its praises after Naim started playing it at the Bristol Show today.
I was listening really, really hard, but I couldn't quite hear it properly from my hotel room in Seoul. I'll have another go tomorrow after a good ear waxing
Don't worry. The eulogies will come soon enough!
Best regards, FT in Kimchi land

Maurice,
Revived my old, unused-for-a-million-years sign-up – so old it refers to a magazine long dead and not much lamented – to let you know I have added as big a back-panel shot as whathifi.com will let me post to my blog coverage. It's linked from the blog piece.
Cheers
