New NDS Streamer

See Doug Graham interview on the audiostream.com site:

"In February we will launch our top-of-the-line NDS streaming network player at the Bristol Sound and Vision Show".

£6250? The CDS3 head unit came in at just under £6800. That's good going if it sounds up to the job.

Interesting - Streamer board enclosed. Subchassis, Twin Burndys, Discrete output stage....

Wow.  Naim has disclosed a rather amazing level of detail here!  I agree with Allen.   There isn't a single design element that, on first read anyway, doesn't sound....right.  By continuing to use PCM1704's, there's even a nod to current CD555 owners!

I do hope they reward visitors to Bristol with one that is actually playing...

One thing's for sure...it is going to be a long 3 months before official product release!

As I said before, CD555, KDS watch out !!

I think you'll like it...

...and a visit to Bristol might well be worthwhile.

There's no rush for us.  We will want to hear one at home with a few hours on it and in the mean time we can put our pennies aside - assuming we like what we hear. I believe that the intention is to have one running at Bristol.

Pardon me for a stupid question ... It looks like NDS requires an external PSU to even make a sound right?
Posted on: 22 February 2012 by Richard Dane

Yes, think of it as a streaming equivalent of the CDS.  Although, having said that, the brass mass loading for the suspended boards looks more like from a CD555.  Can't wait to hear this one!

Wonder if it uses the same Burndies as a 555?

Posted on: 22 February 2012 by james n

Allen - you may want to look at the Hi-Fi Critic forum. Martin Colloms was very appreciative of the active Ovator setup for the demo.

It's so good the guy in the photo is scared of it... cowering... and that expression?

Posted on: 22 February 2012 by Dustysox

And yes playlists are coming...it's like all my Christmases rolled into one!!

Do we know for sure if a "live" NDS will be "singing" at the show this weekend?

Great it looks like my ranting on about RFI has been heeded with the streamer board shielding... Good stuff, that was a big concern about mine of having Ethernet near a sensitive DAC. Clearly the ndac doesn't need to worry as much, but will be great/essential for the NDS.

I am intriqued why Naim still don't twist the buss lines, but leave the straight and parallel encouraging EMI  emission and pickup, perhaps the photo is still a prototype.

Also still using DIN/RCA relays... There is a small loss here, it would be good to have option of direct coupling to DIN or RCA, perhaps at ordering time..

Oh yes does it have the HDX style colour display????

Just seen Steven's post....

Naim’s new reference network player will be on demonstration

The excitement builds.

Unfortunately I won't be there - well, at least in a professional capacity although I may try to get up there on the Saturday for a little mooch around.

It's definitely no slouch though...

AirPlay?

Seems to be a great machine with the good compromises ! Bravo ! Will be happy to listen ! Cheers

But it still needs a separate pre-amp. Not for me, I'm afraid. If I could plug this thing straight into a 300, I might be interested.

Good point Winky - an NDS-Pre. At least you could get away with only 4 boxes (or 5 !)

Hi Simon -

The What Hi-Fi article does not show a color display.

I guess Naim decided they had to leave something for the ND555!

Does it have a digital output?  Or have they quashed the nDAC upgrade path, finally.

On another note, if this does have an enhanced nDAC inside, and it does sound better than the nDAC, can we also FINALLY stop talking about this technology being completely source independent?

Given everything they are doing on the inside it appears they answer that question without even bringing it up.  Of course the source matters, otherwise they would simply be able to jam any old streaming bits inside without detriment.

Congrats Allen!!!!!  i am very happy you are getting the unit you've been begging for!

From the picture of the back panel, there seems to be a BNC socket separate from the 3 digital inputs above that might be a digital output. And I think it was mentioned (say, rumored) before in the thread.

Now that is fun: you can daisy-chain two of these beasts. 2 x NDS + 4 x 555PS...

Ruuuuuunning for cover !

Posted on: 22 February 2012 by glevethan

Two 555PS's to maximize performance - at current US prices that's $18,700 just in power supplies. NDS head unit - $10,000 at least if not more. We are looking at a bare minimum of $30,000 plus $4000 for three Fraim shelves.   I am glad I ordered a KDS .

- I thought we were still in a recession   I guess Naim does not think so.
