Ol' Neil knows a thing or three about quality music reproduction:

Good article. Poor quality downloads will eventually be the ruination of the music industry. It's too easy to download cheap music on i-Tunes etc that the general population think this quality is the norm. Very few friends and colleagues even know about Apple lossless. They think my Zeppelin is amazing when they hear it but when I put one of my kids iPods on it they can easily tell the difference. I think we should applaud NY for his efforts in trying to make high quality digital music more available to the general population. I hope that Apple continue to work with him now that Steve Jobs has died to achieve this.

If there is a heaven then Steve Jobs is still enjoying his vinyl now his work on this earth is over.

Couldn't agree more Steve, but it's a hopeless task. My Nephew was showing me his shiny new iphone 4gs and remarking that the sound quality was so much better than his previous 3gs. I asked him what ipod dock he used and he replied that he didn't have one he listened to the speaker on the 4gs, because he liked to move from room to room and listen, rather than have a dock in one place. So his main music source is a smart phone with a mono speaker, and you can bet that the music files are no more than 128kbps. Seems perfectly happy with that arrangement.

Maybe if Apple do come up with hi-def sound, things will start to change?

He complained about digital years ago.  Now he wants more of it !

Actually, I have never been a huge fan of high res digital.  Less is more, of a bad thing.
