UPnP

Posted by: Big Jo on 14 February 2012

Morning all,

I've had my NDX a couple of weeks now, and am really enjoying the SQ from it, even in my modest system.

I have been using a 6Tb Bufalo Terastation Pro III to serve the sound files to the NDX, however, I have found that the UPnP server with is bundled with the Terastation firmware compresses the living daylights out of the album artwork on my iPad 2. So I thought I would try Assest UPnP server running on my desktop, serving the sound files via a UNC path to my NAS. This works great but means I have to have my PC on when I want to play music. So, I have a couple of HP Proliant MicroServers laying around so decided to rebuild one with Windows Home Server 2011. I have 2 x 250Gb HDD (RAID 1) hosting the OS, and 2x2TB HDD (RAID 1) hosting the music files, or will do once it's completed the install.

My question is, what UPnP servers are you guys using, and what do you think the best one is any why, I am only using the trial version of Assest, but will purchase whatever the consensus is.

Thoughts please???

Kind regards

Jo

Mine has no problems playing HD via HDMI. Does it in its sleep. 10% CPU usage when playing a 1080p streaming web video in Shockwave ( as Chrome plugin). iTunes and screen sharing operating as well, completely uninterrupted.

Why is serving streaming video so much harder? Or are you joshing with us?

Mine streams mkv perfectly via Plex to iPads at 720p (will stream 1040p but to little advantage) - plays both via hdmi Tog

A mac mini will output 1920X1080 and can stream it?  Not on any I have seen.  It has been a while though.

My buddy's wont play anything over 720p without instant swirling ball of death.  Even with 720 it gets a little glitchy.

I've the latest MacMini and it's easily transcoding HD videos and streaming them onto PS3 or iPad. (It's running headless in a different room, so I can't comment on the video rendering capabilities of it's display adapter. Shouldn't be a problem, tho)

But it's primary task is to work as an UPnP server for NDX.

Asset runs beautifully via CrossOver on OS X. Give it a shot, Mac users.

Transcoding.... exactly.  Can you stream or even output 1920 x 1080 to anything?

Take one HD mkv file - add Plex on MacMini and IOS Plex app on IPad. - hey presto. Tog
