HDX HDD Upgrade

Posted by: Montie on 19 February 2012

Did anyone want to upgrade harddisk in HDX?. I suppose is quite simple

Don't know what or how you upgrade...I've posted this question long ago. Question was if one could change from 400 GB to 500 GB drives. The outcome was that is is unfortunately not possible. It had something to do with additional metalwork IIRC...

Upgrading to the SSD version is possible.

400 or 500 or 1 tb or 2 tb drives will all be identical in terms of case work.

I don't agree with You, it's posible [or i 'm wrong] I want to put in hdx 2 hdd with 2TB.

garyi - i agree with You, 2 hdd in naim are 500GB/ 400GB in only for music i WAV/ 100gb or less is for software(system + software to rip/database and other).

I equipped my QNAP TS419Turbo +P with enterprise class 2Tb drives which were around £200 each

So is it possible to have a 2tb hard drive in a naim Hdx, or unitiserve. 1tb would not be enough to hold my cd collection, as I am sure the same for many others.

No, it's not possible. I wish it would be the case...

Get a NAS, put it in a garage or out of the music room, rip with your serve/HDX to the NAS.

In other words use the serve to its full advantage.

The cost of upgrading the HDX will be double what a NAS with far more storage would be anyhow.

It's not obvious why 2 1Tb hard drives won't fit into an HDX.  The drives are standard 3.5" Seagate HDDs (albeit the "enterprise" server models) so the size should be identical.  I'm told the 1Tb single drive upgrade (which I believe is supported by NAIM) requires some metal to be ground off the case.  Maybe the 1Tb drive is positioned differently from the 2x500Gb drives (for heat reasons, perhaps?).

Regardless, at the end of the day, you cannot go against the regime as NAIM will not provide the software to you or install it for you on such an upgrade.  Now, an enterprising soul might be able to clone it from one drive to another.............................

Shame they can't/won't increase the size of the hardrive. Some of us do not want to have yet another box ie a nas even if it is tucked away in the garage. I am sure that many people who have high end systems also have a large amount of music to store. 1tb is far to small, and the unitiserve then just becomes a very expensive ripper. Double the hardrive size and I would buy one. Perhaps there are alternatives out there, Olive has a bigger storage capacity, but wouldn't look as good on a all Naim system Fraim, after spending so much money on a system looks have to count also.

kered27 - in my opinion HDX can suport  2TB, HDX it based on PC(Mainboard + CPU + RAM + HDD + DVDRW). Only problem is that the bios on mainboard maybe can't support a 2TB hardddisk.

I can try put in a larger HDD, a software is a no problem - i suppose a software to clone HDD will be enough to migrate a DATA.

its best to check HDD type before the purchase. cloning of HDD is pretty straight forward. I believed you can boot to BIOS if you a keyboard and a monitor. press F10 or F12 will get you to bios.

I know i boot on hdx knoppix system

To boot media - press ESC after on

To bios - F2 or DEL ( we see a 2 HDD - SEAGATE)

Guys, don't fiddle with the HDX's internals...

Agreed.  I think this thread now steps over the line drawn in forum rules.  Thread closed.
