Black box requirements for streaming and storing music

Posted by: Southweststokie on 24 February 2012

Hi Naim knowledge,

My friend has just bought a Supernait and is interested in adding a unitiserve to the front of it. Will he be able to just down load 24/192 quality music and save it on the Unitiserve hard drive directly or are additional 'black boxes' needed for this requirement to be enabled. I know nothing about streaming and saving files at present and thought you guys could steer him in the right direction. What is the minimum decent equipment requirement he will need to satisfy his needs?

Thanks inadvance for any advise provided.

Ken

Ken,

I hope I am not misunderstanding your question, but: a UnitiServe rips CDs on its internal HD, unless it is the SSD type, in which case it needs an external Hard Disk to store files. It also stores downloaded files but since it doesn't access the web directly, you friend needs to access the web with a PC and then either store the files on it or on the aforementioned Hard Disk.

Unless I am grossly wrong, here's what he needs:

- PC

- Router/Modem with Ethernet ports

- A UnitiServe connected digitally to the SuperNait's digital input and to the router/modem with a LAN cable (or via wi-fi).

- The SuperNait.

I am not sure, though, whether it is possible to store directly downloaded files from the PC to the US (only in case the US is the HD type, and not the SSD type) or if the US >reads< them from the PC/Hard Disk (throughout the LAN connection to the router) and serves them to the SN (through the digital cable).

More technically skilled forum member will give you all the right details (and correct my wrong ones).

Actually, I tried to reply to you to test my knowledge of the matter...

Cheers

Max

The Unitiserve will store its own rips (unless it's an SSD version) only.  Any downloads need to be stored on a stick, USB drive or NAS accessible to the Unitiserve.

I use an 16GB USB flash drive into the back of my UnitiServe for my downloads

it works really well,

I too have a Supernait with a Naim DC1 cable, soon to add a Hi-Cap to the mix

& maybe an ndac.

He will want to store them on a usb stick and plug that into one of the four usb slots on the back of the UnitiServe.

Unless something has changed you will need an external storage device for downloads.  May as well get the SSD version and a NAS because it is highly unlikely that the ONLY music he will have will come from his own rips.

Patrick,

you're right of course and I had partially corrected myself in the second part of the post.

Sorry for any inaccuracy.

You could burn the downloads to CD and then rip them in to the UnitiServe; can't help but feel a Vortexbox is a bit more versatile.

Can't burn 192/24 downloads to a CD - you're limited to 44/16...

And that is where my suggestion falls to the ground, there is no possible way I can answer that - yes you'd have to down sample, which kind of negates the usefulness - can't help but feel a Vortexbox is a bit more versatile
