Unite Strike Thread for Olympics

Posted by: Mike-B on 29 February 2012

Unite leader Len McCluskey has called for civil disobedience & strikes timed to disrupt the London Olympics in protest against government cuts.

Does this guy deserve a knighthood or should we repeal capital punishment for treason.

Other suggestions & opinions welcome.

Tube train drivers and taxi drivers have already signed up for massive "bonus" payments in return for a promise not to strike during the olympics.

I suppose its only reasonable for other unions to feel disgruntled and to threaten strikes, in the hope of reaching some sort of financial deal.

Basically the bloke should be shot. (to coin a phrase from Jeremy Clarkson)

Cheers

Knighthood definitely, not for protesting about government cuts though simply for disrupting the LONDON Olympics.

Calum.

They are not the London Olympics, they are the ENGLISH Olympics.

Hook, line and sinker.

Has he really called for strikes to disrupt the ENGLISH Olympics.

"The attacks that are being launched on public sector workers at the moment are so deep and ideological that the idea the world should arrive in London and have these wonderful Olympic Games as though everything is nice and rosy in the garden is unthinkable," he said. "The unions, and the general community, have got every right to be out protesting. If the Olympics provide us with an opportunity, then that's exactly one that we should be looking at." He also said members of the public should support the campaign by engaging in "civil disobedience".

Looks like an answer to the questions along the lines of "have you consider strikes to disrupt the Olympics.

"then that's exactly one that we should be looking at" suggests they haven't considered it.

When will people learn not to believe everything they read or hear.

Apologies to all for calling them the London Olympics, but lets not stray off topic over pedantics.

The event was awarded to "London" in the competition with the other competing cities, Madrid, NYC, Paris & Moscow.

Either London or Great Britain, surely?

Posted on: 29 February 2012 by Don Atkinson

The "Host City" (ie London) is nominated by the "Country" (ie Gt Britain - not England)

Only one city can be nominated by the country for each set of games.

So I think Mike got it right - the London Olympics (as opposed to the Manchester Olympics or the Edinburgh Olympics etc)

McCluskey should still be shot (in Jeremy Clarkson speak) for stirring it up. Never mind the niceties of a trial or the pedantic details of any "facts".

BBC political correspondent Norman Smith said Unite insiders had played down the prospect of strikes, with one saying there was "nothing specific planned".

"They take the view Mr McCluskey was letting off steam at his frustrations with government policy but they are acutely aware [strike action] would be deeply unpopular and probably counter-productive," our correspondent added.

Looks like his own side would prefer him to shut up.

Cheers

The Olympics are not a natural disaster-where *******s ask multiples for something. A board foot for 400% there normal cost!!!

The cabbies make a living and should continue to do their job. Shut up and drive me where I want.

Anyone else who suggests raising prices or putting the the whole community in jeopardy should step down from office.

Power to the working man and woman. We are being screwed to pay for the Olympics, hardly any of which has made a profit or shown any demonstrable increase in GDP, so why should we not make what we can from it as individuals.

"Being screwed"

Some things we do because it is a matter of the right thing to do or for national pride.

England was broke when they decided to host the Olympics.

"Power to the people"

Do you live in the 60's?

I would not feel bad if you wanted to screw both the tourists and your fellow countrymen. But would you with a clear conscience? Two different menus at the pub? One for the locals and one for the tourists? That would not look good on the resume. The press would go ape shit over that..

The hotels have been booked for years and the traffic in london still sucks whether or not. The best a tourist to do is to confirm their costs and mind the pubs and restaurants prices before they sit down. As far as transportation, there will be so much free, it just will not play.

I agree Derry,.......................

...........provided those (working men and women) like me who don't like your idea can bundle the akward trade union activists out of the way and "shut them up"

Free society and all that - you know.

Or are we in danger of decending into anarcy ?

Perhaps, just for once, we can at least pretend to be a "united" kingdom in the eyes of our guests and re-start the in-house squables after they have left.

Cheers

Don-

If I were Artemis Prime minister.....

I would hope the country puts their best foot forward to encourage future tourism. This is where you make your money.
