42 inch 1080p which one?
Posted by: Don Hooper on 02 March 2012
Looking to buy a 42inch 1080p tv, no need for 3D. Picture quality is paramount any ideas?
Looking to spend no more than £700.
Thanks in anticipation.
Don
I would say it would have to be a Panasonic.
Yes, Panasonics are excellent. Samsungs supposedly pip the Pannys for picture quality though.
Thanks chaps, gonna be a Panasonis as I believe the Samsungs sound quality is a bit poor.
You'll find the sound quality on most of the latest flatscreen TVs is pretty poor Don. Inevitable I suppose with such a small space in which to fit speakers. I use a Yamaha sound bar with our Samsung (an old model) & the stereo with the Panasonic in our other home.
Another vote for Panasonic. I replaced my 6 year old (non HD, £1700) Panasonic recently with another Panasonic. Very reliable - never had any problems with it. The model I bought was a Panasonic TXP50ST30. Cost was £699, and came with 2 sets of 3D glasses. Just shows how cheap TV's have become. The GT models are a higher spec than the ST but cost a bit more. One more tip would be to buy from somewhere like John Lewis, who provide a free 5 year guarantee. Another consideration should be DNLA/Internet access. It's very useful to have the BBC iplayer function built into the TV.
Here's a link (if it's allowed) to a site where you can get a heads up on good deals

As mentioned, sound will not be great so I pipe mine through the Uniti.
I popped into the Panasonic shop in Bristol on Saturday, as our 7 year old 37" Panasonic (it's been perfect for us) is short of HDMI inputs now that we want to stream movies to it.
The shop Manager recommended the TXP42GT30B plasma TV. He bought one himself. It is currently £699 on special offer, as next year's model arrives in 2-3 weeks and will be £1250. It does have 3D but I am not interested in 3D. I also just wanted the best picture.
By the way, the picture was indeed excellent!
Hope this helps, FT
Many thanks to all that replyed. A Panasonic was purchased from John Lewis.
