UNITISERVE Power Supply

Posted by: Pat on 03 March 2012

Looking for a server device to store my music, I was studying the U serve specs.
I wonder about the Power Supply offered identical to any PC.
I do use Power Lines on my system and I am very pleased with the results. I expect to be able to Upgrade with Naim PS.

My question : is It possible to use a naim PS to power the U serve ?

Thanks

No - not with the supplies available at the moment.

IIRC Naim were thinking about offering an 'upgraded' Power supply for the US in the future.

Would be very interested if a US power supply upgrade was being contemplated by Naim.  There appear to be a number of us happy with a US/nDAC/XPS source and extracting the last ounce of performance from the US in the usual Naim way (power supply upgrade) would perhaps be of interest to quite a few people?

Something like the NAPSC would be good.

I had a gripe to Naim at the recent Bristol show about the power supply on the u/serve, I was told it was suitable for the purpose and that Niam tried several power supplies before choosing what they chose.

I still think it's a bit poor on a 2k unit and mine packed up after a few months of use.

does the US have a switched mode supply? Although I cannot see the PS having much effect on a server, I would still expect a nicely built linear supply. After all on computer kit we put high quality PSUs because traditionally they are the weakest link. I also like to avoid switch mode supplies on the same electrical feed as my main system One area I'd expect Naim to score over my cheaper Vortexbox is its power supply

I believe it does have a switch mode power supply and like you Guido feel it's a bit of a poor show from Naim with no option to change to a better supply, how much difference it would make? with no option difficult to say. All I can say is my lap top has a similar quality supply, lap top £500' u/serve £2100.

It's a small switching supply - the US is fairly current hungry so to provide a decent linear supply with it would increase the base price somewhat (and to be honest its a small PC with an upgraded digital audio output).

Gains ? - it depends how you use your US. If its tucked away in a cupboard somewhere on ripping / storage and UPnP serving duties then changing the supply will only affect your bank account. If its in the rack providing S/PDIF to a DAC etc then i could quite see a better supply improving matters somewhat. In the end though it comes down to demand. Are there enough US owners who want a power supply upgrade to justify tooling up by Naim to make a suitable supply ?

Thanks for the comments. For some irrational reasons but mainly to connect to the system, I like to position the US on the system rack. Consequence, the PS upgrade option should be made available. Would it really reach any unrealistic cost to offer such a PS option ? Regards

I agree with AllenB, maybe a psu (say<=£500) on US would make HDX extravagant.

I have US & would love a better PSU (US/nDac/XPS2).
