US backups

I don't want a NAS.
But I do want to backup my unitiserve hdd. Can this be as simple as connecting a USB drive to the serve?
Thanks.
Jason
There is no other way. You will need a NAS.

I back up my uServe wirelessly to an Apple Time Capsule.

A TimeCapsule is effectively a NAS and router in one box. I use one, and it works great.
Thanks folks.
I'll give that a go.
The Time Capsule isn't a very good device to use as a NAS as it only allows the sharing of the root folder of the attached drive - there's no way to create new shared folders.
I'd always suggest using a proper NAS such as a NetGear ReadyNAS Duo or QNAP TS-419.

Not an issue for me, as I only use it as backup, not serving any files. But you're right, it (like a lot of Apple stuff) trades functionality for simplicity of use. For me, I like the way I just turned it on and it worked. About three or four clicks of the mouse and enter a password, and my back-ups were taken care of.
Is it not possible to use my laptop as a network share and then backup to an attached usb drive?

That is possible if you are able to set that up appropriately ... the Naim Music Servers can back up to any SMB (SAMBA) network share so if you can set that up on your PC then that can work just fine however the backup location should remain active and accessible so that way of doing it might be possible but just not practical.

I found the MQ folder in the unitiserve and there all my albums were stored. So far i have then transferred 25 albums over to my laptop and the external usb hd. It seems to work and the files look identical to the originals on the unitiserve.
My question is can i then use this usb drive as a real backup if the unitiserve ever fails. Can Naim use my backup external hd and then transfer the data when the unitiserve is repaired. When you've paid 3000euros you expect it to last at least 10yrs!
Right now the uniti is fine, i'm just thinking of the future!

His answers have (consistently) discussed the severe limitations of such a backup. He's talked me out of thinking such is an effective practice!
