Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball on vinyl
Posted by: Jonn on 05 March 2012
Anyone heard this on vinyl yet?
I'm a bit hesitant as Springsteen's last few outputs have promised more than they deliver which I think is partly down to overblown production on some tracks, although this latest album has a new producer hence the question.
Jon
Vinyl pressing very good and comes with a cd version.
Have you got the double LP version, Lontano?
I have both the vinyl and Deluxe CD on order but the release date down in NZ isn't until March 12th so haven't heard the LP yet. The possible good news is that Brendan O'Brien, who produced the last two new studio albums (ie not 'The Promise') isn't involved this time.
Not bothered with the vinyl, ordered the De Luxe CD.
Not bothered with the vinyl, ordered the De Luxe CD.
I have the deluxe CD also with the 2 extra tracks
Some good videos of Bruce doing new tracks live, from last week on the Jimmy Fallon show.
Love this new track - only Bruce can tell these stories.

This is magic, with Tom Morello.

I couldn't get those links to work, when I tried them last week.
Try the links from here
I received my vinyl copy today from the very lovely Spin in Newcastle. Double heavy weight set with a cd rather than the download card. And as it gets sent to work I have been listening to the cd and very fine it is too. ( bicycles and vinyl are not compatible!) One of the sunday paper reviews said that you might not play it as much as you might like to. Well no, this is a very fine album with a less 'walled' prduction than his recent ones and a lot of variety and I want to play it all the time at the moment.
Listened to both vinyl and the Deluxe CD tonight. Initial thoughts... probably worth 7/10. New work by established artists is always going to be judged by the canon of work that made them who they are, which in this case is a pretty formidable one.
Some good songs, some paint by numbers songs, one that channels "Everybody Hurts" and a couple that Shane McGowan could sing. Of his more recent work (ie post 2000) I would probably still rate 'The Rising' & 'Devils & Dust' as my favourites.
The production is much better than both 'Magic' and 'Working On A Dream' although my LP copy was a tad noisy.
I am putting a super group together at the mo for a charity gig.
Most are past their sell by date,
All in there late 60's early 70's but they will still fill the O2 and tickets will sell out in under 10 mins.
It will be my last ever live gig.
Rock and Roll.
Stu.
Can't agree. I found it simplistic, ponderous, strained, boring and one-dimensional. And I'm a big fan of Tom Morello, and sometimes a fan of Bruce. But each to their own.
Having recently bought a bunch of Springsteen LPs and beginning to really appreciate his output, I have to say I'm with you on this one winkyincanada.
Allmusic have a 5 star rating system. Many of the older Springsteen records get the full 5 stars.
This one gets 3. About right too. It's ok, but just ordinary in my view.
Played it once through and back on the rack for this one sadly.
Coincidentally, I just picked up a s/h CD of Darkness on the Edge of Town. What a gem! Hadn't heard it since the late 70s driving to school with my brother, on his 8-track. So much more emotion comes through with the Naim gear. I can't stop listening to it.
Haven't heard it yet , but I was hoping Wrecking Ball might summon some of that emotion. Doesn't seem to be the consensus here.
I just don't get B.S. and his "sound". I tried and tried to listen to his stuff on all formats: tape, Cd, vinyl, ect... Acquired taste, perhaps? Am I the only one?
Tony
I heard Wrecking Ball on a friends system last evening
Its a crap recording, its all studio junk, synthetic effects, generated whatever, walls of mishmash sound & processed to hell.
Recording aside its probably his worst record ever, poor lyrics & mostly saying nothing.
He's lost his way with this one.
His stuff works great on my headphone system at work: Schiit Audio Asgard + Bifrost => Denon 5000s.
At home, and in the car, his stuff mostly sounds bad to me.
I think it's a fine album, one of his best in many years. That he's still producing work of this quality and intensity after forty years speaks volumes for him.
And it sounds like it sounds. It seems ok to me but I listen to the music first.
I actually found it just fine when I was listening to it at work through my headphones. Just doesn't sound as good on the NAIM.
Listening to it on the Naim right now and it sounds fine to me. But each to his own.
Well, my system is breaking in. The Boss was doing a number on my speakers.
The Springsteen albums mixed by Bob Clearmountain have a unique "sound".
Tunnel of love is my favourite one, and one cannot underestimate the contribution by Clearmountain which resulted in the quality of the music on that album.
Haven't bought his last few albums as I keep getting earache from listening to them and this will be the same.
Each to their own. Great album.
If " Wrecking ball " & "We take care of our own " do not get your blood pumping , sorry, you must be in a coma.
