trying to integrate Naim into my home theatre

Posted by: progfan915 on 09 March 2012

Hi, I have a Yamaha RX-V667 receiver for my home theatre. I have a Naim CD5i and Nait 5i for CD playback. I'm trying to use my Yamaha as a pre-amp, passing the L&R front pre-outputs into the AV inputs on the Nait. The Nait is then connected to my front L&R speakers.

I am getting a loud humming noise as soon as I select "AV" input on the Nait. (CD's play just fine when then input on the Nait is "CD").

What are some possible culprits for the hum, and how can I fix it? Is there a better way to enjoy home theatre and my Naim through one set of main speakers?

Thanks!

See my thread on hum a few rows down. It's probably caused by either too much or not enough earthing. Try an inexpensive ground loop isolator, but before you do that, make sure that all signal and mains cables are well apart and that all connections are secure etc.

Ideally, you should identify the component causing the ground earth loop and fix it. However, that isn't always possible, which is where ground loop isolators come in. Maplin can supply a cheap one, but the Xitel is better.

Thank you for the replies.  I will look into a ground loop isolator.  Does it connect in between my AV receiver and the Nait?

Yes, it plugs into the Nait. I assume you are using it in Uniti gain mode? If google ground loop isolator or Xitel the images should make it clear.

Hi. I have exactly the same problem. My AVR is a Yamaha RXV-2067 and I also have a Squeezebox touch connected to the HDD input.

For further trouble shooting, my system stops humming when I unplug the RCA interconnects from the Yamaha to the AV input or unplug the DIN connector from the CD5i or unplug the CD5i from the outlet. I've tried plugging the CD5i into another outlet, but I am 99% sure that this outlet is on the same circuit.

I'd rather not use a ground loop isolator, so I am hoping someone (KRM, maybe ) ) can help me isolate this problem.

thanks

I got the Xitel ground loop isolator, which solved my problem!  Thanks to everyone for helping.
