Apple TV

As someone with an Apple TV 1st and 2nd gen (but no 1080p TV to make it worth getting the new Gen 3), I look on with interest at the notion of an intelligent Apple TV set. There still seems to be a lot of saber beating going on about iTV trademarking issues, so why not just call it iTelly?

Actually I prefer single purpose monitors and adding in separates. I can see the jack-of-all-trades kind of devices for the ignorant masses, but that's not how I like to roll.

P.S. I just bought a used NAC202/NAPSC from Gene Rubin that was checked out by you recently.

RaceTripper,

I also like the flexibility of separates, but let's see exactly what Apple come up with (assuming they do ...)  And for one thing, It may be advantageous to avoid the HDMI connection currently needed between ATV and TV

Enjoy the 202!

What I don't like about that is the AppleTV will be updated after a year, and then I'd have an iTelly with an integrated -- but outdated -- AppleTV, and end up with a newer one plugged in anyway. I can assure you that I and most other people will not buy a new TV every year, but we might buy a updated $99 AppleTV every year or two. I like to hold on to my expensive TVs for much longer.

The only way I could see this working is if the AppleTV part is a user-replacable, plugin device and not hard-wired in.

The Apple TV hardware has only been revised twice since 2006, and it could be argued that with 1080p under the belt (for which the iTelly would have matching capability), it's unlikely to need revision for a number of years yet (in or outside a TV box).  What is far more likely will be software revisions, and as always these would happen via download direct to an iTelly.

We shall have to see what Apple brings.

In any case we have a Samsung 67" LED DLP 1080p TV that we just love. It is extremely unlikely we would replace that with an iTelly. I doubt Apple will go that big, at least initially. And I expect the pricing to be at a premium for their TVs.

Slightly off topic but still related to the ATV?

What are your thoughts on the sound quality difference between the ATV1 (or perhaps Airport Express if you have one) and the ATV2? I know that the ATV2 outputs the digital stream as 48kHz whilst the former 44.1kHz but to be honest, in isolation, I don't find it an issue.

I for one couldn't tell you.

I've had both AppleTVs and Airport express and never used them for music, except to try the ATV2 with my UnitiQute. I am streaming FLAC and ALAC from my MacBook Pro using Playback. But 90% of my music listening is vinyl anyway.

Can you say imperfect timing?

Just bought two ATV2s back in December and hooked them up for the first time today after dropping off cable converter boxes and downgrading my cable TV package and I read about ATV3.

I stopped by Best Buy and was promptly told no refunds -no exceptions past the refund date even when it would be a swap and I'd take the restock hit.

Oh well, it could always be worse than slumming with 720P ;-)

Apple stuff holds it's value pretty well. I'll bet you could sell them for 65-75% what you paid if you want to get the new one.

Yep, the clerk at BB suggested eBaying them but to be honest, It's probably not worth the hassle to me.

I might buy one or two more for less frequently used TVs in the house so that would fix the problem;-)

Really enjoying it (ATV2s) as I type this. Nice to watch what you want when you want to;-)

Agree with your comment. I would really like to see what Apple comes up with. And I like ITelly but it might be lost on most Americans. There was some superb display technology at CES this year so the bar is set high. Having said that, I now WiFi music from my Mac to my UnitiQute and likewise use my Apple TV. With iCloud there is more to come. Exciting possibilities. Even for those of us who are technically challenged.
