Joe Henderson, So Near, So Far (Musings for Miles)
Robert Wyatt - "Shipbuilding"
You are so totally correct.
Shine by Joni Mitchell is not too bad ...
We tend to overlook Joni's later work, but this is actually a lovely album.
This is what I call beautiful music ...
Jan Garbarek - In Praise Of Dreams
Love Never Dies - Martin Simpson
Yep.
Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star." And I said, "Constant in the darkness, Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar."
I could drink a case of Bud. Winky, this truly is an amazing album. The depth of feelings, emotions she put in this - well, I've never experienced before. NO music collection should be without this album.
Absolutely Wugged Woy and winkyincanada!!
'A Case of You' from Blue is an all time top track. And it is very worthwhile mentioning the same track from Joni's album 'Both Sides Now' from 2000.
Here she re-works the track with an orchestral backing, including wonderful players like Peter Erskine and Wayne Shorter.
And she sings it through a very lived in, whisky drenched, and smoke ridden voice. But the authority of the song is enhanced (as is the track Both Sides Now) and is is every bit as beautiful. She wrote it as a girl, and sings it here as a woman (hey - wasn't there a His Bobness song all about that topic??)
Her later orchestral record Travelogue is overblown, but this record, and this track is simply divine.
Don't miss it.

Beautiful music, of the gut-wrenching sort:
- Steve Vai - Tender Surrender, a beautiful, beguiling gem, as intellectual as it is visceral
- Focus - Live at The Rainbow, Answers? Questions! - Questions? Answers!, specifically from 6:40 onwards where Jan Akkerman launches into a blistering guitar solo over four minutes long that, for me at least, plumbs the depths and scales the heights of a human spirit wholly given over to expressing the truth of music in all its sadness and joy.
- Steely Dan - anything from Aja or Gaucho, the beauty in those compositions, the truth of the stories told, goes straight to the pit of my stomach and lifts me to a place I never want to leave...
I bought the Steve Vai LP Alien Love Secrets in 1995 and to my shame just realised I had never played side 2, which is where Tender Surrender lies.
I have now, and it is rather good.
If you like this track do play "Always With Me. Always With You", off (another Alien record) 'Surfing with the Alien' by Joe Satriani. Great tune, beautifully played.
And Joe Satriani used to be Steve Vai's guitar tutor, of course.
Cheers
