Upgrade UNITI with NAP200 or 250.2

Posted by: Adler on 13 March 2012

Hello community,

I'm thinking about a further upgrade of my "old" UNITI beside the 192kHz sampling board exchange which is almost a done deal.
It's  in the direction to add a NAP200 or NAP250.2. Now it's your turn ;-) ... looking again on your experience if it's worth to invest bucks in this upgrade in terms of improvement from UNITI as amp to NAP 200 to NAP250.2.

Thanks in advance for exchange your view on it.

Have you thought of upgrading to a Superuniti?

+1 on the SU - I had a Uniti and needed more power. I demmed Uniti + 200 versus SU and the SU won hands down. I traded my Uniti + £1500 for the SU - if you factor in the cost of the upgrade plus the power amp the SU is very close if not cheaper!

Personally, I would not partner the Uniti with a 250. I know some people here have done this, even with a Qute, but the 250 really benefits from superior amplification up front. Richard once stated that in his view the 250 really needs at least a 282/HC to work best. I kind of agree, after partnering it with a 282/HC and 282/SC I recently tried it with a SuperNait/HC as pre and did not like the result. I have now settled for a SN/HC only. The question is, do you actually need the added drive and power of the 250 with the speakers you have? If this is not an issue I would stay with the Uniti as is or at best add a 200. SuperUniti makes a lot of sense, if you don't want to spin CDs.

Thinking in  terms of future upgrade it would make more sense to get a 250 as I'm sure in the long run you will get rid of the Uniti and the 250 offers a lot more  "coupling".  Get the 200 and you'll end up upgrading both, at a cost!

The 200 is an excellent upgrade to the Uniti.  I plan to demo the SUniti soon

and will use the 200 with it, probably in bi-amp mode.

Don't agree. Got to get away from the notion that further up is always better and that it is the goal to aim for. 250 and 200 have different voicings, some prefer the former others the latter, some skip the 250 because they prefer the 300, others quite happily stay with the 200 on its own or go active. Others like myself went up to 282/SC/250 and are now loving the SuperNait/HC just as much. Max out your source before worrying about the power amp and audition what you think of buying. That would be my advice. Bit stream into nDAC/PS555/SN/HC is my perfect equilibrium... others may just as well find theirs at Uniti or SuperUniti level. The only thing that counts is the music and you can enjoy that plenty at XS level just as much...

I started with a bare Uniti, then added a 200 and then replaced the Uniti with a 202, and now I'm just very happy with my bare SuperUniti! I don't intend to add anything to the SuperUniti and simply rest there and enjoy the music!

Another +1 for SuperUniti. I kept my NaimUniti so that I could go multi-room but the SU is a great step up from the NU, let's you stick to 1 box and leaves the door open for a 250 upgrade later if you are that way inclined (never say never but I'm very happy with the power and SQ from my SU and am not tempted to add another box). Cheers Ian
