Ripping 16 bit to 24 bit 96 Khz and above

Posted by: CDI on 23 March 2012

Apologies for the daft question, I am just getting into this streaming thing and noticed when ripping a cd on DB Poweramp I could rip standard 16 bit 44 Khz to 32 bit 96 or more. I have a few hi res downloads from HD Tracks so know how good the higher resolution can be but would like to know if it makes any difference ripping standard to higher resolution?

Unfortunately I am away and cant listen to the new download has anyone else experimented this?

Hi ripping a CD to greater than 16 bits will make no differene, other than depending on your ripper it could make the rip a lot quiter.

If you rip and upsample (greater than 44.1kHz ) it may sound different. Essentially you are displacing some of the upsampling the Naim would otherwise do by your ripper encoder. This then becomes completely subjective, with the being no  right or wrong. I personally prefer to leave the up sampling to Naim and rip at the originaa sample size and sample frequency..

HD tracks on the whole have higher definition media, ie is not a case of simply up sampling or upping the resolution.. It's sampled from the original at a higher definition. (usually..)

I would rip them to 16/44.1 unless they were HDCDs in which case you can genuinely get extra from them, by getting dBPA to do the decoding for you. Up-sampling from 16/44.1 to 24/88.2 can improve things, but to 32/96 doesn't sound a good idea to me, because 44.1 doesn't go in to 96 - so I'm not sure quite what it does.

Wait for a few more knowledgeable replies, but I tend to match the original - though some up-sampling can be beneficial - my W4S Sonos ZP90 goes to 24/88.2 and it sounds very good.

However, it does it on the fly - I wouldn't be that happy if to rip to what is really the wrong setting unless I could go back if I changed my mind. (Perhaps you can with dBPA).

I ripped to 24 bit / 96 Khz - guess I need to get home, have a listen and swap the SB touch for the NDS and sell the CDS3 then decide! New Asset NA 4TB is great

Sorry I wrote that before Simon posted - he is a very knowledgeable poster and got in before me.
