First Class Stamp to cost 60p - a bit too early for 1st April ??

Posted by: Don Atkinson on 27 March 2012

Talk about taking the piss.

The post office isn't even apologetic.

And the government is taking on responsibility for future pensions, at least that's wahat I think I heard last week.

Postmen must be laughing all the way to the bank and early retirement.

Begining to make bankers look respectible again (perhaps)

Cheers

One afternoon I post a letter and more or less anywhere in the UK it arrives next day. I find the post reliable and fast. 60p is the cost of what..a Mars bar? A cup of coffee is three times as much.

Lets face it, how often do we post stuff anyway. We have text, email etc etc.

I still think it is decent value.

I find little to no need to use first class mail for letters.  I do things electronically.  Fewer resources used, less waste, and transactions are instantaneous.

The Post Office is pricing itself further out of the market.  They wonder why they are losing volume to the internet.  Poor service (I regularly do not receive post until after mid-day), junk mail (even though I have opted out), and now even less value for money.

Time to wake up people....the pension fund is the loss making part of Royal Mail, hence the government have taken THAT burden off of the future shareholders.

The price of stamps is rocketing purely to fill the coffers ready for the future shareholders... (no one will invest in a business not making a big fat profit).

Someone described modern capitalism as privatized profit and socialised losses...(think of the £1.3trillion pounds the banks have had from the taxpayers)...well this is another example of that!

As a postmen the idea that I will get rich through privatization is very funny...keeping my job is the best I can hope for.

To be honest, getting someone to come out and pick up my letter, take it to the depot, get someone else to sort it, get it driven, railed, flown to somewhere else, anywhere else, I like,  so that someone else can sort it, hand it over to someone else who will deliver it to the recipient's door for 60 (or 50)p doesn't seem outrageous.

If I want cheap, I email...

Prices do not go up until 30th April, you have plenty of time to stock up. I am building a stockpile of 2nd class (36p up to 50p) before then, currently have 2 x books of 12 and plan to buy one book a week to see me through the next few years.

Did the regulator restrict the price to an unprofitable level for years? Does the Royal Mail still have to deal with other couriers' loss making post? I'm not surprised by the jump, and if it covers costs, fair enough.

Is there a time limit on the stamps that show 1st or 2nd rather than the value? Can I buy one hundred and use them over five years?

Cheers,

I don't believe there is any time limit on the "1st" or "2nd" Class stamps that don't show a face value.

I guess you could buy a hundred books each with 12 stamps saving a potential £180 or so. A bit like taking a punt in a Futures market.

Presumably the Royal Mail is heavily susbidised by the taxpayer at present?
