HDX stream to NDX

If I would use the HDX as a streamer to a NDX or Uniti, will the NDX also see and play the music I have connected to the HDX on a usb disk?

My understanding is that the HDX will see it and present what it sees to the NDX.

I related question. If I had say an NDX on the network but in a different room to the HDX, how would I play the music stored on the HDX hard-drive?

Could the DTC on a notebook be used to select the albums stored on the HDX to play through the NDX?

If this is possible would the HDX have to be on all the time I was using the NDX or could the HDX be left on standby?

Finally, music stored on a NAS used as a music store for the HDX, can this be accessed directly by an NDX or would it have to be accessed by the HDX first?

Unfortunately my knowledge of networks and streaming leaves a lot to be desired.

If the music store is on a NAS share it will be passed through. If it resides on the HDX HDD it will be available as network music and will be served up by the HDX to any streamer that asks the HDX to serve it. If the HDX is powered down it won't be operating as a server and therefore the NDX won't have a data feed.

To give a precise answer I would say: Stream clients (like NDX or Uniti) never "see" the music by themselves. They require a server, which index, "see", and send the music to them. The server in the case of these questions is HDX. It doesn't matter for HDX if the music is stored on its internal drive, NAS, or usb stick. It treats them equally.

DTC on notebook controls only the local playback of HDX. It doesn't control streaming. For this you need a UPnP control point. NDX has a small control point on its front screen. Otherwise, n-Stream can be a control point on iDevice. Naim has unfortunately not released a control point software for computers, but there are some third party alternatives like Twonky or foobar.

So, streaming requires three distinct components: server, control point, and client.

I hope this helps.

Aysil, thanks for your explanation, it is clear now that the HDX streams all music connected to it.

It's a small point, but I suspect NDX will see devices attached to the HDX separately. I have a USB drive on the back of my Unitiserve. The NDX sees it as a device and I have the choice of browsing it separately or consolidated as 'All CDs'.

Yes thanks for the advice. Naim should produce a schematic and post it in FAQs.

Seems odd that for the HDX you can control/browse music using the DTC on a PC but to do the same with Naim servers  you have to use the Apple specific n-stream.
