'Cannot reclock audio data' - ND5XS

Posted by: Salmon Dave on 30 March 2012

The ND5 apparently doesn't like my other CD playing input via coax. The DAC will accept this and play, although the 'lock' light goes out shortly after starting. I wondered why the ND5 simply refuses to play this input.

I have a CD player (DVD actually) playing via coax input on my ND5. I haven't played a lot of CDs, but then ones I have played worked just fine. Try a different cable maybe?

Rega Apollo I tried had exactly the same problem with a Naim DAC. I think there may have been a problem with a few of them regards the s/pdif out (Rega are a good company and have no doubt fixed this now), but your CD player may be behaving the same way.

I know there are a few which don't lock, but my question was mainly to highlight and query why the ND5 wouldn't play the music at all, whereas the DAC would (albeit in non-locked mode). Seems no answer is forthcoming.

Hi Dave, well according to DAC white paper, Naim have implemented a synthesised clock that allows non compliant or out of tolerance transport clock rates it can't lock onto to be recovered. This is used when the Sync light is not on. It's a fall back as it I slightly noisier (jitter) than using the fixed clocks.

It might be the ND5XS doesn't have this advanced feature from the NDAC, so if the ND5XS can't recognise and lock onto the transport clock, it has no means of recovering it, and drops the signal.

Thanks - that sounds about right. I'll have to test out which players it will recognise!

Being the fortunate owner of a ND5XS

and using the apollo-r as transport, both connected with Chord signature digital,

I can confirm the streamer cannot reclock the data

Nevertheless the ND5 plays Music fine

I can't imagine it would be with reclocking

Less Jitter
