which speaker?

Posted by: JackRyan on 01 April 2012

I would like some advice please. I am going to buy a Panasonic television from John Lewis plc soon with all the technologies. it will be a 40 inch screen or above.

I want to buy external speakers. Which ones? Chosen from B&W, should i choose the Panorama sound bar, the new MT-60D mini, PM1 or CM1, CM5, CM8. I have a medium size room

I have not heard any of them yet. Please, your opinions. I do not want to use an AV amplifier

Should I add a supernait for gaming, cd, dvd sound exposure?

A SuperNait is a good amp for multi-purpose use. It will give a much better sound than the internal amp on the TV driving add-on speakers. You can also use the built in DAC to improve the sound from your BluRay player.

Right. If I use a SuperNait for television, which speakers to drive through them?

The SuperNait is very versatile and can drive a wide range of speakers. Pick something you like in your budget. You can certainly drive much bigger and better speakers than those in your list if you invest in a SuperNait. I have S600s, but the S400s are perhaps an even better match.

If you are thinking of spending £5000 on an amp and speakers, that is a serious investment in hifi. Do you want a hifi, or just better tv sound? What else will you use the amp and speakers for?

I want to optimize sound in the home

For my Apple iMAC I am buying the B&W M-M-1 speakers

For Television I am looking for best speaker without the use of an external amplifier; so which one?

However, the SuperNait is an attractive idea. I could use it for PlayStation 3. A normal DVD player will saffice because my son finds free internet downloads. For CD, would the CD5 XS be good enough? I could use my old Linn too on the SN. I really want to sort out optimal sound coming from the television before my hifi.

In future I am saving for Nac282 / Hicap2 / Nap250/2 to run with SBLs. I think these speakers too powerful for a SN. I heard a demo once before and it kept clipping but otherwise the music was supurb.

I have an original Linn LP12 and SBLs. Just waiting to use them again

To clarify, the S400 is better than S600 for a SN / TV source

Still not sure about the SN option so I can save the money for Hifi, but it could serve as a bridge

If it were me, I'd get a Panasonic 520 soundbar for the tv for £300 and save for the amps you want. Remember that you can pick up olive kit for good prices. An 82, hicap, 250 would be ideal for your lp12 and sbls, with no fluffing about with external phono cards required. You could play the tv through that quite happily and have tv sound and hifi sorted in one go.

I will look into the Panasonic 520 Soundbar option.

Olive kit through the television sounds like a good idea

Thank you

Glad to be of service! I'm only recommending the sound bar because it's what I happen to use. I'm sure there are lots of other options. I have my tv off to the left of the speakers, in the corner, so running it through the stereo is not viable. I recently got the new Panasonic 2012 model 42" led tv and it is stunningly good, and only uses 42 watts of power. The bar links up with a single HDMI and integrates perfectly. But if your telly is between the speakers, the £300 for the bar could be redeployed in getting some amps that can do both tv sound and hifi.

I have a Panasonic tv 42 inch with totem signature mani 2 speakers. I use the supernait an hicap combo an find the internal dac makes tv an Blu ray sound amazing so much so I don't think the tv speakers have been used for more than 5 mins.

you have given some ideas I never thought of. Thanks a lot

The supernait is a good choice for you with a AV Receivers

yes i have been thinking about the SuperNait with S400.

I shall arrange a demo. It means i can use my LP12 sooner than later and buy the O5xs too.

Then in 5 years when the cart needs changing I can but the Nac282/250/2 system for starters.

My new generation tt will be the Avid and or digital source.

Thanks for recommending the SN.

Another thought.  You can pick up a Naim n-Vi (now discontinued) on eBay pretty cheap - it's a surround sound processor, but not lossless, so it's fine for Dolby Digital, DTS and so on into 5.1.  I have one with a SuperUniti next to it: you can bypass the front left and front right amps from the n-Vi and use the SuperUniti for those.  That way I have great hi-fi sound from the SuperUniti (or in your case I assume a SuperNait would work the same? need to check...) when I want music, yet I'm still using those great amps and speakers when I'm watching a movie on TV and so on.  I have B&W rears and centre speaker (M1s) and sub (PV1) with Linn Majik 140s as the 'main' front left and right speakers.  Sounds great, didn't break the bank.  My $0.02 anyway
