Private Messages?????
Posted by: No Regrets on 01 April 2012
Is it possible to send members of this forum a private message? In other forums that I participate in, by clicking on a person's avatar, it would bring me to their profile and give an option to contact the member via the forum private messaging feature.
I haven't been able to figure out how to do this.
In case you are wondering why I am asking? Sometimes when reading a person's reply in a post, it may trigger a question that I'd like to ask that member that may not quite be in the scope of the particular thread's discussion point of interest. So instead of side tracking the thread, I'd like to talk directly to the member.
So, if there is a way to send a private message on this forum......could someone let me know how to do it?
Thank you for any and all help!

There are no private messages on this forum. The facility was closed some years back after too many incidents of abuse. It was decided that being an open forum, whatever is said here should be for anyone else to read.

Thank you Richard for answering my question. It's too bad that people chose to abuse such a useful tool. In any case, it is nice to be able to participate in an open forum and I think that you've done a great job with it. This is definitely one of my favorite places to discuss audio and music.
Warmest Regards,

I agree with No Regrets. I love this forum. Being relatively new to Naim, I learn a lot reading the threads but sometimes, I would like to be able to contact some of the more experienced Naimers with specific questions. Some guys and gals here are really encyclopedia about Naim and it would be nice to have an opinion on some things that really isnt worth posting on the forum. Yes I always can ask my friendly Naim dealer (very nice guys here in Montreal) but you know.... a 2nd opinion is always good to have... (sorry for my english ---- frenchie here
There is an obvious way to have a private conversation -- put an email address in your profile.
You can then ask that person if they wouldn't mind sending you a message.

or, as has been indicated, just ask the question on the open forum, even if it means diverting the thread. This way, we all get to ask the question and benefit from the response. Its what often makes this forum so interesting !

Hi Don -
There are quite a few non-UK-based Naim fans who are concerned about being ridiculed in open forum for asking introductory-level questions. I know this because I've received those emails. I attempt to answer their questions, but I also strongly encourage them to participate and contribute (and to ignore any trolls!). And sometimes, eventually, they do.
IMO, this forum has fewer cyber-bullies than most, but sadly, we do still have one or two...

Thank you to everyone for your considerate replies. I will probably just embrace the overall welcomeness of the forum and just ask for the members indulgence while I ask tangental questions.
By the way Hook, as I looked at your profile, I noticed that we are practically neighbors! I live in Appleton, WI. I was up in your neck of the woods a couple of years ago and bought a beautiful pair of 1960's vintage Tannoy Monitor Golds in custom cabinets for a secondary system of mine. Very beautiful area you live in with wonderfully friendly people.
Best regards,

Howdy neighbor! ;-)
Moved up here from Washington, DC, in 1986...have threatened to leave each and every winter...and fallen back in love each and every spring! For most of the 90's we had a cabin in Wisconsin -- just west of Winter on the Chippewa river -- so maybe about half way between us? We finally burned out on maintaining two residences, and sold it in 2000. So much natural beauty in that part of your state!
I've posted before that the Twin Cities ranks high as a place to buy audio gear, and especially as a place to buy vinyl -- 21 separate outlets last time I looked. Next time you come west, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction!
Thanks for reaching NR! And welcome to the Naim forum!

As somebody who has recently closed my Facebook, Linkedin, and Schoolfriends Reunited affiliations, I was getting just too many people, of whom I had never heard, wanting to be my friend in some way or other. I am pleased that Naim do not have a messaging service.
Just is just too much of it.
I think I'll go and write a letter. With a fountain pen.
Yes, I am of a certain age, and proud of it.
don, overcast downtown York
PS if anyone wants to chat hifi personally with me, I will be delighted. Use my e mail address.
Many people are a bit shy and uncertain when joining a new "club". I accept there has sometimes been a bit of ridiculing and even cyber-bullying on here from time to time and that is regrettable. Thankfully most newcommers find a few allies early on who help to put the bullies back in their place. Not perfect, but it could be a lot worse.
By "could be a lot worse" the PM system that exists elsewhere (and used to exist here) has enabled private "gangs" to form and "manipulate" the forum (and bully individuals). Dreadful and totally unacceptable.
On balance, i prefer the current system, but agree its not perfect

Howdy back at ya and thanks for the welcoming. Unfortunately, I do not get up your way very often. But if ever I do again, I will definitely hit you up for that info!
You bring back some childhood memories for me. When I was a teenager, my uncle used to take me up near Winter Wi for musky fishing.... Lake George near the flowage if I remember correctly. Wow, they had some monsters in those waters.
Thanks again Hook!

Agreed, I had the same problem with Linkedin.
