Loading Logitech Media Server onto NAS

Posted by: fatcat on 02 April 2012

I've been running a SB Touch for three months with the Logitech server on my PC. I'm now thinking of buying a NAS, probably a basic DLink model, but unsure on one point. Will I have to load the server software onto the NAS or will it already contain the software.

Unless you are content to run with the PC on and scanning your music library you will want to load the Logitech software onto the NAS. It is very unlikely you will find a NAS that comes preloaded. In fact you should check the Wikipedia page for 'Logitech Media Server' ( google for it) and in particular the section which talks about makes of NAS which Logitech say it can be run on. Vortexbox is one solution which Logitech support swell.

The latest version of the Synology operating system has a pre-packaged version of Logitech Media Server which can be very simply installed onto the NAS through the browser interface.

Vortexbox works with Logitech too

+1 for VortexBox

As others have said - there are several NAS that have it loaded already, or make it easy to add using the dash board. Otherwise, I wouldn't mess with trying to install it yourself unless you have some serious Linux chops.

Slimdevices (the company that makes Logitech stuff) has an excellent support wiki and forum. Think it's ok to post the link that answers your question here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/in...ling_to_a_NAS_Device

I loaded the Logitech one from the slim devices website onto a QNAP NAS by following the instructions on the forum as mentioned above.

Didn't find it easy to install, but I may be a bit dim when it comes to IT. But, it has worked fine for over a year now.

Thanks for the replies.

Found out that some DLink NAS run the logitech server, so may give one a try, but tempted to go for one with the software already included.

I've read through a couple of threads in an effort to decide what to do. Gave up as it was giving me a pretty bad headache.

Think I'll go and relax by listening to the Ella Fitzgerald LP I picked up today. Dropping a needle in groove certainly isn't a headache.

Vortexbox comes with LMS installed and it works very well as a UPnP or Squeezebox Server.
