Is there anybody out there...

...who can help?
I have three copies of The Wall.  A 2012 remaster, a1979/80 first pressing and a 140g remaster from about 10 years ago. I have rather stupidly mixed up the vinyl and sleeves for the first pressing and the 10 year old remaster and, although one clearly sounds better than the other I want to be 100% certain which is which. Can anyone give me any information about the vinyl itself or the label that might help me identify the first pressing? One difference on the label is that the c Pink Floyd Music Ltd copyright mark on one label is in Gerald Scarf written script and on the other is the only text on the label in a regular typeface. But presumably someone might be able to give me some info about the text written into the run out grooves?
Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but I know some of you have the first pressing.
Cheers
Tony

If this isn't the one google the matrix numbers on the runout.

I was going to say have a look for the ISBN, or similar number, but then thought, I had better look at my original vinyl copy. Best to check before making a fool of yourself, just as well, no ISBN, or similar numbers on the cover or labels.

As Fatcat said, the numbers in the run-out in the centre of the vinyl, so a little help.

1979 original UK pressing (as far as I know)

side 1: SHSP 4111 A - 2U  and 355
side 2: SHSP 4111 B- 4U some other marks are illegible
side 3: SHSP 4112 A - 3U and FRT
side 4: SHSP 4112 B- 3U  AND TML XX

I suspect the 4111 and 4112 is enough to work things out.

Hopefully you can track down the other info.

That is the first time this album has been out of the record rack for years, pretty much the same for the CD. Not my favourite Floyd album, too much Waters, not enough of the rest of the band for me.

All the best.

Thanks fatcat. That sorts it out perfectly. As expected, the UK first pressing is the one that sounds best, but was somehow in the wrong cover. Much appreciated (and I'll use Discogs in future, didn't know about it).

Much appreciated Jamie. Yes, the 4111 and 4112 made it clear which was the first pressing, so I'm now sorted. What's strange is that the other LP I have has numbers that are similar to the Discogs numbers that are listed from the mid 1990s, but during a period where Discogs just list CDs, no vinyl. The number I have isn't listed by them.

I'm with you on it not being Floyd's best. But it is one of those albums where I remember quite clearly the moment that I bought it and the anticipation of hearing it for the first time...1979 (I was 17), Our Price Records, Waterloo Station opposite platforms 1 & 2 (Waterloo had two OP record stores at the time). It's incredible how much old tosh the mind retains...

Maybe the subject of a new thread?

I know exactly what you mean. When I started buying vinyl in 1973, I can still recall the various shops and circumstances surrounding the purchase. Several of us would browse WH Smiths, Woolies, Boots etc for our weekly choice (usually just the one album in those days) and head back to listen, often as a group of us. Reading sleeve notes and discussing the albums all build on the memories. Somehow not the same with CDs, and never will be the same with dowloads etc.

Still have every single albm I bought and still play them. They have the added benefit of bringing back so many memories.....
