Cover versions unusual , unheard or unlistenable

Posted by: TWP on 10 April 2012

interested to know of  cover versions that you know of that are unusual , not well known or completely unlistenable  but not particulary in that order.

these could be covers that you wouldnt expect the artist to have done or ones that surpass the origional. Also the unlistenable , the covers that murder the origional . X factor and the like spring to mind.

i would suggest the ones below are worth listening to in case you havent already ,

Cud, Urban Spaceman, in my opinion   better than the origional

Brakes, Jackson

Babes in Toyland, we are family,  grunge meets disco

the wedding present , steppiing into christmas

Big Black , the model , Punk meets electronica , you wouldnt of thought it possible .

and the not so good

the cocteu twins , frosty the snowman ,

Tori Amos covering 'I Don't Like Mondays'.

It is actually not a bad cover-version, in my opinion, but I can imagine it being very distracting as part of a soundtrack. It is perhaps a bit "intense" for that. As is most of Tori's stuff.

Good cover, but the original is superb.

+1. NIN's "Hurt" ia a modern classic.

Elaine Paige - The Queen Album. A masterpiece of misjudged bad taste. Worth a listen for a laugh but it's a real turkey.

Clapton's  muller of the Y.M.O. Track  Behind The Mask.

Never liked what Eric did to it.

On the other hand "I Shot the Sheriff" is nowadays almost a Clapton song - so sometimes these things work and sometimes not.

One more unusual one for this subject is the Cheech & Chong number Born in East L.A. (although this is more like a parody than a pure cover version).

Not for me ... I'd forgotten Eric's version (best thing really as the vocals are dire, perhaps he was knocking on heaven's door) - there was only one Bob Marley - the original from Burnin' leaves the covers far behind though the version on Live! is reasonable (though I prefer the studio cut). The version Bob did at the Apollo and in similar vien on Live in Japan is quite good too, but again lacks the magic of the version on Burnin'. Perhaps, the best version other than the original is the extended version by the Wailers which can be found on Talkin' Blues

I like EC (especially in his Cream days), but he's no Bob Marley.

I agree that EC is no Bob but I still stand behind what I said about that particular song. (Cream for me is more about Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker than EC.)

I have just thought of one cover version I find completely unlistenable, a song I really like covered by a band I really like.

Yes covering Paul Simon's 'America', laboured, turgid, pointless.

I also remember led Zeppelin's 'Thank You' from a Duran Duran album of cover versions, frankly no matter how much reverb you put on Simon Le Bon's voice, he is no Robert Plant.

Talking of Zep covers. This Charlie Lankester album has a very different version of In My Time Of Dying.

Josh White did a very good cover version of In My Time of Dying. He did his version in the 1930s.

Hi  naim_nymph:,,

i was intrigued by this and my copy arived today,, it really is very good , unusual indeed ,, dont confess to recognising all the songs covered but satisfaction is certainly different , can you recommend any other cat power as an introduction.

thanks TWP

The Cat Power Covers Album is excellent imo

But mayb not so in your's  (?)

Best to have a listen before buying if you don't like versions transformed into key of doom and gloom dire minor.

Just love it myself though : )
