What UPnP server do you use with your Naim streamer?

Hi TJ

Logitech Transporter...great for (dare i say it...playlists!!) and Spotify.

I use asset if LMS starts playing me up.

Mac Mini running Majestic or Playback. The only way on a Mac to handle an iTunes managed library correctly.

Hi TJ,

Currently using Playback on Macbook Pro to stream to ND5XS. Wouldn't it be great if Naim developed a UPnP server version for Mac, one that could transcode the various formats, such as AIFF or ALAC on the fly to WAV? What are the chances of this being released? Also running Sonos from that same Macbook, works a treat.

I'm using vortexbox, which runs miniDLNA by default.

Hi TJ,

Did your original post change? My answer reflected original question.

Suffice to say....

In summary.....Asset.

Synology NAS drives come with a built in uPnP server software within its DSM (DiskStation Manager) suite.  I suspect that most Synology NAS owners are running either DSM version 3.2 or DSM version 4.0.  The DSM software also has the ability to transcode most codecs to WAV on the fly.

Best regards, FT

Logitech Media Server.  Allows me to stream to Naim ND5XS as well as my Logitech streaming devices around the house.

Cheers

+1 for the Synology UPnP server.  Compares very well with Asset and in my experience is better than Twonky.

Same here. I use a Synology NAS with its built in UPNP Server.
Before I used Qnap with Twonky: Synology is better for me.

Another synology user here using the built in server within DSM 4.0.

In my office system:

I have Vortexbox on a Silent PC/128GB SDD (VB Software) 3TB Seagate HDD (Music in FLAC) which feeds a UQ both connected to same Juniper switch. UQ outputs to Eclipse TD510 speakers.

[It serves music only - I've no interest in films]

In my main system:

Mac Mini SSD Lion-iTunes+BP & W4S Sonos Connect/Naim DAC/555PS/282/SC/200/Allaes

Mac Mini has ALAC files on - the Sonos can get music wirelessly from the Vortexbox if the files are not on the Mac: I have a Sonos Bridge to facilitate this - Sonos has the best interface of all the systems by a country mile - there no wired network in my main listening room.

I'd really like to see Naim release the NDS so that firmware upgrades are trivial and there is no never to user a Windows PC (which I simply don't have/want for anything). By swapping my systems around (VB & Mac) the NDS could replace the Naim DAC.

Not sure why you are requesting the info, but happy to supply. I really can't see how a music storage device could be any better than a Vortexbox, but we all have our own requirements.

All the best, Guy

+1 for the Synology UPnP server (DSM 3.2). I'm not using it with a Naim streamer however.

Minim server looks interesting too.

I have a RipNas and a Synology 211j.  Most of the time, I'm streaming from the Synology.

Does the Synology support streaming 24/192 FLAC to ND5XS? Thinking about getting the DS212J.

With the SuperUniti, the DS212J didn't sound that great. Had to go to the ds212 for it sound any good. I'm actually getting the QNAP 629: Total overkill with 1GB RAM, a dual core processor etc, but in a hobby where you pay 245 for snaic the extra 200 shouldn't matter.

Right now I'm streaming from my MacBook Pro with Playback. The DS212J is $200. That is my budget. The 212 is $300. At that point I'm halfway to a Mac Mini.

I may go the Mac Mini route for streaming, in which case I'm waiting to save up the funds and until Apple comes out with a new version.

Well, right now I'm streaming from my PC. :-)

I was considering going the MacMini route if I wanted to use it's optical out and use it as a transport into a dac. Not sure I'd consider it as a pure server. The MacMini Server edition is  a lot dearer...

With the mac mini, I'd still need external hard drives and an external hard drive enclosure, plus I'm sure managing it headless would be  a chore.

In any case, for what my opinion is worth: I've tried the synology DS212J, and it wasn't any good. The DS212 sounded fine, but at $300, the qnap 219 PII is better value. (2GB processor, more ram etc.).

Maybe I'll just get that, and save myself $200.

Having said that, even at $500, the qnap 629 is way cheaper than the UnitiServ.

You don't need the to get server version to stream (i bought the server version mainly for the extra onboard drive capacity). I don't technically stream, though. I just use it as a storage unit with iTunes as the player.

Headless operation isn't really a chore to manage. I use screen sharing from a Macbook Pro with few problems.

Posted on: 16 April 2012 by MangoMonkey

but we're a PC household... so would need PC software to manage the headless mac mini

Posted on: 16 April 2012 by Guido Fawkes

Install a VNC client on your PC and you can use it as a wireless Mac terminal (keyboard and screen) and have full control of the Mac Mini. Just select the remote management on your Mac Mini and it'll just work. The PC bit is quite complicated in comparison, but this video shows you how.

TJ,

RipNas streaming to Naim ND5 XS.

I use ReadyDLNA (aka MiniDLNA) to stream FLACs from a ReadyNAS Duo to my UQ wirelessly. I have to say it's a very good server once you figure out the extremely minimal user interface, as long as your files are well tagged. Zero dropouts, once I'd ditched the BT router.

I also use Logitech Media Server on the same NAS to serve a Logitech Squeezebox Radio. I don't think it's as good so I don't use it on the UQ - lots of duplicate files and doesn't organise itself so easily.

+1 - in-built UPnP/DNLA server in the Synology DiskStation (DS110+). I use Synology DS Audio application on my Android mobile to control my brand new NaimUniti.
